Somehow, my monitor was able for a while to display everything even with my laptop shut.
At one point early on, I saved everything in my main folder upstairs onto back onto my external hard drive. Back downstairs, I had to temporarily unplug my keyboard, since there are only two USB ports, and saving the whole folder to the laptop became its own task. I had to free up space, started looking around for individual files to delete (starting with all my old convos with Jake), and eventually found a folder containing all the same files as the folder it resided in. Deleting that allowed me to save everything wholesale, but it still took more than a few minutes to copy everything remaining.
Found the monitor off after taking then to have lunch, and that's when I had to start propping the laptop slightly open just to see anything. Sure enough, everything was finished, but I only had 2 gigabytes left free, and started finding other stuff to delete, and managed to free a total of 58 GB back up before taking a nap.
Brian got back to me shortly after I woke back up, specifying DP protocol versions that he has had to upgrade or downgrade before, and suggested I try that DP cable on the upstairs computer. That one does not have a display port, so I just brought the monitor up there down to experiment with. And, it actually worked with that spare computer, allowing me to return the laptop to my room, and I brought the new monitor upstairs.
Next task was to back my files up to that computer. This time, though, I simply selected the few folders that I've actually been using lately.
Next was to set up this ethernet adapter that we had delivered to us the other day. Mom saw the first part of this through with me, but without an Internet connection, we couldn't tell whether or not the instructions I followed were actually working to enable the device. Mom helped me to carry everything up to the apartment just temporarily in one trip before heading to the gym, and I repeated the process before plugging the adapter in. Brought everything back downstairs, and after setting it all back up, all I had left to do was select our wi-fi network.
With everything all set up, all that remained was a pair of speakers. Mom suggested when I returned a phone call to her, that I just take Dad's from his computer and hook those up.
Mom also plans to return that HDMI cable when she leaves work today.
(Funny, how something brand new would come bundled with a component that rendered it second fiddle. In this case, for when I decide to play or modify a game.)
