A year ago, there was a thread on the VGMusic forum titled "Most Infuriating Things about Video Games." During the course of that thread, I listed eleven things that pissed me off about video games. Several months later, on New Year's Day, I made a resolution to post one of them on the first of each month. This rant was not one of the rants I made on the forum thread in question; I'm writing it entirely from scratch.
And without further ado...
Rant #12: Nintendo Power. Ever since Future U.S. bought ownership to it, the magazine pretty much stopped providing walkthroughs for games. What the fuck is that all about? I know we can get walkthroughs on the internet nowadays, which wasn't the case when the magazine first started, but walkthroughs are what put the "Power" in Nintendo Power. It's slogan was "Now you're playing with power!" because it gave you the power to beat video games, not because it gave you the latest updates on the gaming industry. If the latter is what we wanted, we could just read GamePro or Electronic Gaming Monthly, which also covers consoles by Sony and Microsoft (and did cover Sega, before that company left the console business).
Okay, so that rant wasn't mentioned in the aforementioned thread, but it did have its own thread, which I did post in this blog after it had run its course. Read it here if you're interested.
Wanna know what else sucks? I thought I had finally found a site that has the Makeruna! Makendo OAV up for download, but it was a total scam. I already ranted about it on a site called Ripoff Reports, which you can find here, and I should also note that this is the first time I've filed a report on that site. It's sad that this isn't even the first time I've been cheated (and I'm glad at least I was careful with Rising Stuff when I bought Makeruna! Makendou Z), but it sucks even more that there's practically no realistic way to find the OAV in question. I can only think of two: Offer money for a copy when I host the Makendou website, and take a trip to Japan and use whatever sites they use there instead of Ebay.
Seriously, even though the Japanese do use Ebay, I'm betting that they don't use it nearly as often as people in America. So far, I've only seen a handful of PC-FXs, three copies of Makeruna! Makendou Z, and roughly one (maybe two or three) at a time of each other PC-FX game that even does appear on the site. Mon Colle Knights (GBC) tends to be available only once or twice at a time. Only a few copies of Game Tengoku and Wonder Project J2 are typically available at a time. I still have yet to see another copy of Getter Love!! Snowboard Kids Plus has only appeared for the third time as far as I know on the site (the first *after* I stopped looking out for it). But, look for something that was localized or made in America, like Mario Paint or Turok: Dinosaur Hunter, and you'll find at least a whole page of copies, most of which aren't even selling for 99 cents.
Interestingly enough, the Makendo OAV isn't the only thing that's nearly impossible to find in America. Check this out. Everything you read in the opening line and the second body paragraph is exactly what's going on with the OAV...except that I don't have an extra car I'm willing to trade, and I've only spent about half the past year looking for the video.
