Kendo Rage (Super NES): This is where it all started. This game appeared in the Now Playing section of volume 48 of Nintendo Power. I was curious enough to download it when I was in 11th grade, and it was pretty good to start with, but...

Makeruna! Makendou (Super Famicom): This was what "Kendo Rage" really was! "Jo" and "Osaki Yoritomo" were originally named Mai and Doro respectively. Kinda bland, but that's to be expected of a first-time game. The music is cheesy, Mai and Doro are the only main characters in the game, although Makenro appears as the boss for level 6, and I'm not too fond of Mai being an orange-and-white-clad redhead in this game when she was a blue-and-white-clad brunette. Mai's Makendou outfit is also kinda bland for my tastes. Still, this does rank as my second favorite of the trilogy, and if I had to choose, I'd choose this version over Kendo Rage.

Makeruna! Makendou 2: Kimero Youkai Souri (Super Famicom and Playstation): I found this game during the summer of 2003, when I was looking for all these Super Famicom games to hold me over. That's when I also found out that "Kendo Rage" was actually the first Makeruna! Makendou. Unfortunately, I'm not generally a fan of fighting games, and this game is also somewhat bland. Once again, cheesy music, but we're now introduced to Mai's sister, Hikari, and Mai is actually depicted as a brunette instead of a redhead. From what I understand, Doro kept Mai tied up somewhere because he's a pervert and found Hikari to be cuter than Mai. What an ass.

The OAV: From what I understand, this installment is supposed to be just as wacky as the games. However, I once saw the opening and ending themes on YouTube, and they were actually kind of depressing. However, what was even more depressing, was when I went back to see them again, only to find out that they were removed. Just recently, someone I've been talking to about the Makendou series had downloaded it from YouTube using YouTube Downloader, and uploaded it to show to me privately. (Don't bother asking for a link; it's a private video, and I'm the only one he has allowed to see it.) I'm not really a fan of corny music, but I'd rather listen to any song from the first two games than this.

Despite my thoughts about it, though, I am gonna download the video anyway, so that I have it for its rarity.

Now, about the actual anime... well, our main characters are Mai and Hikari Tsurugino, once again in their boring-to-look-at original outfits, and aided by the cyborg Makenkah. The two girls live alone in this installment, so anyone who's not familiar with MMZ might assume their parents to be dead. However, I would have appreciated it if Saya was in this installment.

Honestly, even though I am gonna download the intro and outro from YouTube, I don't think this installment is so important to me. It once was, mainly because TheNewX from DeviantArt (who made this pic) wanted to see it for himself. If it ever comes up on Ebay, I'll be sure to buy it, and then see if he's still interested. With Retro Savior, I am gonna attempt to translate anime that never got translated, so this might have a chance to be dubbed if the company is successful enough. It is property of OLM, so that's where I will go if I ever start Project Mai and decide to make a translated compilation of the series to go with it.

Makeruna! Makendou Z (PC-FX): This is where the series really picks up! Despite its simplicity as a game, this is by far my favorite part of the game trilogy. Mai and Hikari have more attractive outfits (in my opinion), their parents and their cousin Saya are introduced, and the theme song is much more lively than that of the OAV. Most of the music in this game is actually ambient, except for the boss theme which, while not one of my favorites, is still of the exciting variety. The only cheesy music in this game is in the hidden FMV where Doro spies on Mai during her day at school.

Want to see the opening theme to this game? Here! Enjoy!

Project Mai: This was the codename of a plan for a fourth Makendou game that I once dreamed of making. However, this is probably something best left to a Japanese team to make, because of the culture and the type of humor. Chances are, if Retro Savior is successful enough for me to retire with millions of dollars left over, I would go to Datam Polystar, or whoever will own the Makendou franchise at the time, and write up a contract stating that I'll give them x amount of money if they made the game, and fulfilled some requirements along the way, and even more if they fulfilled some bonus criteria.

Basically, it would be this: The first 3D Makendou game ever, Joe from my Yoshi's Island fic is introduced, it would have the option to listen to the dialogue in English, and the music would be adrenaline-pulsing! The theme song? Probably something like this! With lyrics! Yeah, that's what I'm talkin' about, not that downbeat OAV intro!

On a final note, let me say the following: Magical Girl Control Act is NOT the kind of future that I want the girls to have! I don't want them to have such a dismal future where they spend their lives being tortured and killed; I want them to have a future where they can have friends and raise families.

After having just beaten Makeruna! Makendou Z, I wish there was some fanfiction for the series. Of course, it's such an obscure series that only one fanfic for it exists, but to start with, I do hope that I can find someone to help me start over with SMW2: Yoshi's Island rewritten, which will cross over with the Makendou series. I'll be sure to do whatever I can think of to enhance the fandom, including showing pictures of the cute girls, writing my translation of MMZ, and linking to my fandub in the future.
