Feb. 18th, 2013 09:18 amMom noticed a peregrine falcon eating a blackbird down our driveway sideyard yesterday, and called me and Dad over to come see it. We each got a view of it with the binoculars, and also took a picture or two of it.

Had a brief convo with John and Jake not long afterwards, linking them to my new prototrope. Mid-chat, Dad wanted to get on, and Mom had me help her unload the dishwasher while he was on, and told me that she was gonna go down to the shop to feed the cats there. I decided to use that as an opportunity to pass some time while waiting for more replies to Game Gourmet, and to also buy myself a scratch card while we were down there. Dad came off right after I finished with the dishwasher, and I made a bit of haste to wrap things up.
On the way there, Mom stopped at a nearby supermarket to pick up a bouquet. I bought her a Powerball ticket with some quarters that she gave me, and then went to one of the scratchoff machines to buy myself something with a single and four quarters that I had on myself. Turns out that the machines don't accept coins. Bought a 2 Cool with the single I had, exchanged the remaining quarters for another single, and then spent that one on a Holiday Hundreds at a separate machine.
Went to the shop, Mom fed the few cats that showed up, and then we headed home. I scratched both cards off. Didn't come very close to winning with the 2 Cool, but almost won up to $6,948 with the HH. The rules say "Get 3 like amounts, win that amount. Get 2 like amounts and a [present] symbol, win triple that amount." On it were two $15's, two $2,000's, two $300's, two $1's, and... a $10.
Seemed like a real coincidence that there would've been two of each amount except one, and seeing that that was the same brand I sent fifteen of to Grandma Barbara, Aunt Marie, and Cousin David for Christmas (one from each of us to each of them), I decided to give Grandma a call. Wasn't home at first, but she eventually did call me back. She doesn't quite remember, but apparently, none of them came that close to winning anything, except for $2 with one, which she claims she sent me. Seeing as I never received it, we assumed that it got lost in the mail, but me and Mom decided after the call was over that we would send them the amount with something Mom already plans on sending them.
We also did make some small talk while on the phone, such as about the falcon that appeared in our frontyard. She also told me that if someone in her family ever wins big (which neither they or we ever have), they'd split the winnings amongst one another. I told her that that's what we'd do if any of us ever win over, say, $1,000.

Right before my aforementioned convo with Jake ended, he told me that things like Toothbrushes, Rulers, and Words Of Love/Swear Words work in the Earthbound trilogy specifically because of their comedic nature, and trying to make them more realistic would only go against the spirit if it. Truth be told, I actually had considered beforehand actually having anyone with one on them use them during the more lighthearted battles.
Even with actually useful things like Made-You-Looks and Saltwater Guns, though, I had spoken to Chelle about utilizing them without making anything seem like an Ass Pull (or at least too much like Nichijou, where Mai is shown holding things like a baseball mitt or a digital camera that she didn't have moments ago, whenever a situation calls for it). For those of you who've already read the first chapter of Starbound, ( Read more... )
Then again, not sure about the novels, but if there were an animated adaptation of any of the actual games, perhaps the characters actually would pull stuff out of seemingly nowhere. Furthermore, this, being something semi-comedic based off of something mostly straightforward (albeit still lighthearted), is already planned to be an inversion of how fanfics of comedic works in general tend to be much more down to Earth (as I stated more than a month ago).
That all said, this is probably a good time to list everything I thought up as items not too long ago:

Moving on, I have just started considering playing the PSX version of Tales of Phantasia, which recently got a translation patch on ROMhacking.net. One of the screenshots on its newspost featured a list of dishes to cook up, and if you'd like to know, that's the image I have chosen for Game Gourmet. Looking into it further, the cooking system that it features (which someone said is a staple for the entire Tales series) seems a lot like how Maximillian "invents" things in Dark Cloud 2. Therefore, lest so many kinds of foods go to waste like they did in Earthbound and Mother 3, I think I might just implement such a thing for Tsukasa if I ever get to commission for a game adaptation of Starbound, since that's going to be her main role in the party.
Chances are, though, that will probably wait until I'm all done with Kanji in Context. Just hoping that I'll be able to speak to Jake then about using PSXfin on Macintosh, since he's already cited Tales of Symphonia as one of his most hated games of all time.
