May. 13th, 2013 07:55 amWent out with Uncle Robby yesterday morning to buy new sneakers. Stopped at Dunkin Donuts along the way, and I got a Mom's Heart donut. Rob got a bottle of soda and something else.
Famous Footwear was still closed for another hour when we got there. Rob decided to go get an oil change while we were waiting. Found a few places that sell them, but they were all closed except for the last one, which charges $50 for their service. At that point, the store was about to open, so we just drove back.
Still five minutes early, we went into Big Lots first, and Rob got some black hose to water his trees with.
Not much to say about our time in Famous Footwear.

Called Mom when we got back to the house, and wished her a "Happy Podunk!" She asked if that was Mother's Day in Japan, but I explained to her that Podunk is actually the name of Ninten's hometown in Earthbound Zero, but was originally called Mother's Day in its Japanese counterpart.
(And whaddya know, Mother's Day of this year just so happened to coincide with my transcription of Mother: The Original Story.)
Also spoke to Dad and Brian, and Brian explained to me that "podunk" is actually an English word used to refer to a small, obscure suburban town. I then explained to him the deal with the one in Mother/EB0, and by extension, that all towns (except for Reindeer and Snowman) were originally named after holidays, but were renamed for the unreleased American localization (from what I understand, so as to avoid alienating older players, since it was meant for gamers of all ages to enjoy).
We chatted for a bit about the Earthbound trilogy in general, and Brian mentioned how he wished he could ever get to play the 3D game, Earthbound 64, after having seen promotions for it in Nintendo Power and possibly elsewhere. I told him that that game is actually what became Mother 3, albeit in 2D like both the other games.
(Well, he has told me recently that he hardly ever plays video games anymore. But, if he does come up here for a week while I'm still here, I'll be sure to set him up with either Earthbound Zero or Mother 3, if he's actually still interested.)
