dmxratedHere's yet another entry about Monster Collection Chronicles, which will also include stuff about other fanfiction and a few games. Today is Christmas, so tomorrow is gonna be a regular update. I was planning on merging it with that entry, but there's probably gonna be too much else to keep on mind for that update. The next day will be something not MCC-related.
Anyway, I've started re-reading Cursed Yoshi only several days ago, and one thing I now find inspiring also reminds me of the first chapter of the MCK fic Being With You, something which I'll explain shortly. PM'ed Darkermark to see if he'd make time to update CY anytime soon, but he told me that school really has been preventing him from planning out future chapters. (Frankly, I don't blame him; this is exactly why I'm gonna avoid getting married and having children at all costs.) I also asked Chelle if she had any opinion on BWY, and as it turns out, he only read it a month and a half ago, and left a rather long review pointing out all kinds of flaws.
But anyway, let's get started...
In Being With You, Mondo and Rockna are all by themselves in the woods, and the only friendly person they've met so far was a girl named Natalie, who was abducted shortly afterwards. They cannot return to Man World for anything, so they set up camp there, before venturing into a desert in the next chapter.
In Chapter 3 of Cursed Yoshi (4, if you count the prologue), Marcus and Manny are all by themselves in the forest, and nighttime has fallen by the time they come across a Birdo who had been killed by wolves. Their journey had just started after their home village was annihilated by a cavalry earlier that day, and the only person they had any contact with (not counting an unnamed human bandit) was another Yoshi named Xenly, who explained to them who is responsible for the destruction and slaughter, before simply going her own way for the time being. So anyway, the two Yoshis have found a Birdo corpse and the house in which only she lived, and being able to spend the rest of the night there saves them the trouble of setting up camp.
Just Mondo and Rockna in Being With You; just Marcus and Manny in Cursed Yoshi; both the first night in each fic. If you ask me, this would seem like a nice way to start the first fic in the MCC series. And if Mondo and Rockna found a small house in the woods, which had only one resident who is now dead, that would be even nicer.
One thing, though...
Since most of the Supporting Knights lived in New York City, and Mondo, Rockna, and Katsuo all lived in one place on the other side of Man World, the Knights are going to spend much of their time at an established headquarters, when they're not taking care of matters elsewhere in Mon World. Furthermore, not only is this the fic that introduces both Katsuo (who happens to be Rockna's brother) and their mother Midori, but Katsuo begrudges his parents and McKnight for drafting him into this whole situation when all he wanted after returning to Japan was to be able to lead his own life and enjoy it, instead of having his destiny chosen for him. Naturally, that would mean that the Hiragi parents had brought (or led) the Knights to wherever McKnight's headquarters is located (was going to be the flaming forest in the first anime episode, but I might relocate it).
Hmm... Could it be that Mondo, Rockna, and Katsuo are just summoned into Mon World and forced to find the headquarters themselves, as a test of their survival skills and Rockna's sixth sense? If that were the case, could Katsuo still have been in NYC upon being summoned, either still abusing girls or already in jail, and simply have run off somewhere in a fit, like Rockna did in episode Ring-a-Ding Ding? Might be a possibility. There were also times in the anime when Mondo and Rockna got separated from Ichirobei (such as in episode All You Need is Lava).
In any case, let's look at some unrelated games and one fanfic, where the main characters are on their own at first, before finding a headquarters:
Genesis of an Adventure: A Digimon fanfic written by the same person who wrote In the Shadow of Chaos, and like that fic, this one also follows the same formula as Adventure 01. We start out with five main characters, transported from three different places somewhere in Japan to one particular spot on File Island. For most of the fic, they and their newly met Digimon can only navigate their way through the world with the help of anyone they meet. However, at some point after defeating the fic's third main villain, they spend the last arc living at a particular base, where Gennai and his colleagues explain to them what's going on and give them assignments.
Zone of the Enders: The Fist of Mars: Just as the spaceship Bonaparte III blows up in midtravel, main character Cage Midwell escapes inside the LEV Pharsti, taking a girl named Myona Alderan with him. Next thing we know, he comes face-to-face with an unidentified man piloting an Orbital Frame, and wins this first battle before plummeting down to Mars. After hitting the ground, soldiers from Earth's army come along and nearly arrest him, but he is saved by some folks, who then accept him into the mini-organization Born In Space.
Chrono Trigger: Crono and co. will not find any particular base until a few chapters into the game. It is when he, Marle, Lucca, and Robo all enter a time gate at the same time that they are brought to the only existing place in the End of Time, where the Guru Gaspar will tell them and any new allies they find everything they must do in order to stop Lavos from arising. While three of them will be actively exploring and taking care of things in some time period or another, the rest of the party will remain at this dark place, only coming into action when called to switch with someone else. (In the novelization, this is explained with a portal-creating device given to Crono when they first come to the End of Time and meet Gaspar.)
