First, for those of you who haven't read the original list, here's a link:

http://dmxrated.livejournal.com/365960.html

Now for some changes that have been made:

-The Krippler Brothers are now the Molebear Brothers, at Jake's suggestion from the Mana game franchise.

-Ching Long is now Dao Ling.

-Alpha now fulfills the Storm element.

-8-bit is no longer part of the team, but will have his own role in a comic relief battle at the end of part III.

-Replacing 8-bit is now:

Team Iron, a five-member sentai team of actual medieval knights (both male and female). All still unnamed at the moment, though Chelle did suggest I use some names from medieval Europe. Created based on the word "knight" used to refer to the protagonists, and also because Chelle referred to the hero team as a "sentai team" several times in her blog before. (Chose the team name because I wanted something that doesn't require "the" to precede it, but don't know at the moment what else I could call it.)

-And the head honcho would have been the Grim Reaper, but Chelle kinda argued that one down and why he'd serve Warp alone, given that death is a neutral force that applies to all creatures, and that he is just the personification of the concept.

(In response to this entry, Jake will probably use most Castlevania games as an analogy, where Death directly does serve Count Dracula and is fought as the second-to-last boss. Of course, that probably won't hold up, since that's a completely different franchise altogether. I myself find it interesting enough to note, though.)

Chelle did suggest that I use someone like Eurynomos or Samael if I wanted someone death-themed, since they don't personify death itself. However, a little while ago, I did propose someone similar to La Ilim from Grandia III (not a direct clone, though), since I happen to like his voice and some things he says in battle (the latter which she actually found narmy when I named examples). The leader in question could just as easily have been some kind of lich or something, but since that particular character carries a green crystal skull, that may have had something to do with my current choice (since Death often is portrayed as skeletal).

-----

So anyway, let's briefly analyze each of the villains (including 8-bit), according to four different groupings:

Group 1: These are individual members of the team, who (currently) are rather stereotypical of what they are and have an established face-to-face combat style.

1) Mortimer (the clown)
Name basis: British
Speech type: relatively normal, but with a rather boisterous voice (similar to Flotsam from Dark Cloud 2)
Combat style: wields magical playing cards and a theater stick (human form); wields dual rapiers and breathes fire (monster form).
Mooks: circus-themed
Element: Fire (after the shirt depiction of a clown w/ actual flames for hair)

2) Admiral Baer (the pirate captain)
Name basis: supposed to be Dutch, but turned out to be German instead. Oh well.
Speech type: pirate-speak
Combat style: wields a blunder bus and a rapier, and rides a "pirate tank" of sorts.
Mooks: pirate-themed
Element: Water (sailing the high seas)

3) Camille (the witch)
Name basis: French
Speech type: rhymes
Combat style: magic (Chelle did ask me to specify how her's would differ from regular magic)
Mooks: might consist of Dark Fairies (Chelle's example), Gremlins, spider ladies (from Dark Cloud 2), bat-type monsters, etc.
Element: Wind (since witches are known to fly on their broomsticks)

4) Alpha 01-H (the gynoid)
Name basis: letters and numbers
Speech type: A.I.
Combat style: various types of firearms
Mooks: robotics
Element: originally Metal (since that's what mechanized beings are made of); now Storm (since such beings need an artificial power source, such as electricity, to operate)

5) The Nameless One (the murderer)
Name basis: English words
Speech type: mute
Combat style: wields a machete
Mooks: zombies and other undead creatures, might also include werewolves
Element: Bog (since similar serial killers are known to stalk people in places like swamps or the woods).

6) 8-bit* (now relocated)
Name basis: electronic jargon.
Speech type: monotone
Combat style: would fight with a sword, magic spells, and various items (both offensive and defensive)
Would-have-been mooks: went undefined
Former element: Storm (since video game systems need electricity to operate).

Group 2: Subteams consisting of a leader and three or four near-equals. Like the above group, they have an established melee style.

1) The Molebear Brothers (anthropomorphic animals; all male)
Name basis: American
Speech type: Totally Radical
Combat style: brute force
Mooks: other anthropomorphic animals (all male)
Element: Earth (originally could have been any animal, but their specialty was already set to be enough brute force to smash boulders with.)

2) The Beehive Brigade (magical girls; all female)
Name basis: Japanese
Speech type: mostly normal, except for Yuka (who'd talk rather fast and loud) and Izumi (the stoic member)
Combat style: psychokinetics
Mooks: other kinds of magical girls (all female)
Element: Holy (based on Sailor Moon, a renowned force of light)

3) Team Iron (sentai team; both genders)
Name basis: Will likely be various medieval European languages.
Speech type: possibly normal
Combat style: weapons and magic
Mooks: other kinds of medieval knights
Element: Metal (for armor)

Group 3: So far, these two have no established melee styles, and I'm not even sure exactly what they themselves or any of their pawns will be.

1) Dao Ling
Name basis: Chinese
Speech type: Zero Wingrish
Element: Frost (inspired from the ice level boss from Super Valis IV.)

2) Alfonso
Name basis: Italian
Speech type: probably similar to Mortimer
Element: Space (since at least one occasion will involve transporting whichever protagonists are present to a game-like dimension.)

Group 4: The would-be leader and his closest associate, both similar to those in Group 1.

1) Elias
Name basis: Spanish
Speech type: formal
Combat type: slashes with knives where his fingers should be, and can also shoot extra knives by swinging his arms. Also quite agile, and can jump around as easily as running.
Mooks: Curse Dancers, exclusively.
Element: Demon (He is a vampire, but not a stereotypical one like Dracula, unlike those in Group 1 to what they are)

2) Death (a.k.a. the Grim Reaper; probably won't remain him, but let's just use him for reference.)
Already a widely known figure.
Speech type: satanic
Mooks: none; he's already in charge of the other generals.
Element: Time (as the successor of Reda, who previously opened up the Time Realm.)

That all said and done, Chelle has mentioned before that Camille, The Nameless One, and 8-bit would be rather out-of-place for Rokumon-verse. I have kept that on mind since, and it became easy enough to replace 8-bit after having thought of a third, dual-gendered team to complement the Molebear Bros. and the Beehive Brigade. With the other two and Death, though, I think I've become somewhat attached with this little ensemble and the way I grouped them I've described in the above cut that it hasn't been so easy to let go of, even though I did say before that I am open to different suggestions. (Not an outright no, but it might help if I understood why I'm still somewhat inclined to retain them.)

So far, I have already agreed not to place any humorous scenes or dialogue too close to anything much more serious. The Nameless One still remains untouched to this day, but I did consider modifying Camille. Given some things that Chelle suggested, it's possible that she'll be a dark version of Kahimi, rather than a stereotypical old hag w/ hat and broomstick and all.

Chelle:

Mooks: might consist of Dark Fairies (Chelle's example), Gremlins, spider ladies (from Dark Cloud 2), bat-type monsters, etc.

Gremlins already exist in the anime, but are demon elementals rather than wind. They don't have combat powers and instead cause technical problems and people to make bad choices. From what they've been seen doing, they tend to target only bad people.

5) The Nameless One (the murderer)
Name basis: English words
Speech type: mute
Combat style: wields a machete
Mooks: zombies and other undead creatures, might also include werewolves

Werewolves don't really have anything to do with the undead, other than frequently being pitched against vampires.

That aside, an idea to diversify his mooks might be to add a death songstress. In the rest of the franchise, there's a parallel force to the green wind, the death wind that animates corpses.

That or she might be that dark Kahimi you mentioned, but having two villains use undead might be misfitting the theme.

1) Dao Ling
Name basis: Chinese
Speech type: Zero Wingrish

Seriously recommend against giving the Chinese character a grammatically bad speech pattern, there's been done to death in stereotypes already.

That all said and done, Chelle has mentioned before that Camille, The Nameless One, and 8-bit would be rather out-of-place for Rokumon-verse.

No, of the first two I was critting their appearance, not their concept itself.

I'd be interested if you'd like to think of a more fitting appearance for The Nameless One.

I'll see whether something comes to mind.
