Yesterday, figuring how likely it is that she might have forgotten stuff, I showed Mom my synopsis of Earthbound from 2013. She told me that she still wouldn't be able to make heads or tails of how such a complex story was all put together, but did google how video game stories in general are.

Before we even got started with my playthrough, I asked her to read The Adventures of Tintin: Cigars of the Pharaoh, so that she could explain to me how Herge decided where Tintin should go throughout its story. She summed that up as the need for something to drive him forward, that it wouldn't make sense for him to go from Egypt to California for no particular reason. I wrapped my head around that much pretty easily, and that's when I decided to show her something so much more intricate as Earthbound.

But then again, creating a game story is not so linear as writing a fanfic that I intend to host chapter by chapter as I go along. A game is something one puts out only after completion, and so, there's a lot more room to hop around and flesh something out here and there before and even after it can be considered complete. It seems reasonable to assume that Earthbound's story started out much more basic than when it was eventually finalized.

In fact, I suppose one could argue that maybe I should just abandon the fanfic and start commissioning now for different parts of the game I would have liked in the first place. Even Itoi saw Earthbound primarily as a game and nothing else, and for that reason refused to have the cancelled Earthbound 64 adapted into any other medium despite having already had the first two games adapted into light novels post-completion. There is the issue of how weird it would seem if there wasn't nearly as much intra-party dialogue beyond the opening arc as within, but maybe once I have a lot more stuff to work with, I could probably continue the fanfic then and flesh that all out, and then use that as a template to flesh the game out one more time before releasing that.

Will sleep on such an idea, but if that's what I decide upon, then it may very well be time to seek work in order to fund the game. Maintaining focus on writing was the main reason why I never looked into that, although I will reserve the option to quit whenever I see fit.
