dmxratedWell, I managed yesterday to find a much simpler patch that doesn't outright overhaul the game, even though it does still include some other changes.

Called Brian in the evening to let him know that I'd be copying my newly patched copy onto his computer once he's back home, and thankfully, he hadn't bought it yet. I attempted to bring up my main issue with the base game, but he found the concept of Joy itself interesting, and compared it to Grief Seeds in Madoka, something that had actually occurred to me a few days ago, even though Kyubey is the one who instills Magical Girls' needs for those and the lack thereof is what turns them into Witches.
(Just this morning, I happened to realize certain other parallels between Lisa and Madoka. For example, Brad's unwanted protection of Buddy would mirror Homura's vain attempts to protect Madoka as a fellow Puella Magi or to prevent her from making a contract in the first place, and both keep the respective recipients from being able to shine. Buddy is driven by pride to defeat all the remaining warlords of Olathe and become the queen, while Madoka has an inferiority complex and a sense of altruism that Kyubey exploits to talk her into making a contract, promising that she'd be the greatest Magical Girl ever.)
