Feb. 15th, 2007 06:53 amYesterday was the first day all winter that we've had snow for the whole day...which was, in the form of freezing rain. Mom didn't have to go to work, so she was able to pick me up at 12:30, which is two or three hours earlier than her shift ends. My socks and shoes got all soaked just from walking from one building to another building on campus while I was at school, so I had to fill my shoes up with newspaper and have them dried out near the fireplace. I also had to bring in firewood, and the greenhouse floor was turned into mud near the door through which I transport the logs out of.
Somewhere along the way to the library lives a man who Marie calls "the chicken man" because he has chickens in his backyard. Yesterday, his real name turned out to be Walter Sorenson, because an article in Newsday (titled Passerby to the rescue) reported that his house burned up. It turned out that he also had cats, dogs, and rabbits to save along with the chickens. When the topic was brought up, I asked them where the house was, and they were surprised I never noticed such a house that stood out. I asked Mom to bring me to the library when she drops Marie off at work, so I can get a look at it before it gets taken down.
While I was home, Marie had both her lights on in her room, and I had to go in three times to turn them off. After the third time, I unplugged the one on her bed and unscrewed the bulb from her desk light, and hid the bulb in my room. Mom was home when Marie found out, and she told me to reinsert the bulb into her light. After I did that, I asked both of them "Don't either of you have any concern for the planet's future?" Mom said "I do, but you are not the father. You are to tell me if Marie's got the lights running."
