Dad started to feel particularly unwell yesterday morning. Mom had to bring him to the hospital, and had to come home by herself late in the evening, after I had already gone to bed.

Good thing I had off from work yesterday.

Having had yesterday off, I was able to continue testing that capture card without making that the first thing I do.

Originally, I figured that it would provide its own window, much like Video DVR (or EasyCAP before that, what I used for my 2014 recording of Makeruna! Makendou Z) or that camera I bought recently. After consulting with Brian and Drew on Signal, I brought things to the TV instead, to hook up through my laptop.

That extra cable I bought two nights ago after my shift ended (6 PM) was something I thought I still needed, to hook the laptop to the TV directly (with my original cable for that already used up), despite no such connection specified in the instructions). What happened there was a lack of "existing" sources when OBS asked me to either select one or create a new one, but the window that popped up after I did the latter did in fact list my capture card (as "USB Device").

Started a new game in Star Ocean as planned, managed to save the first chance I got, and it turns out that my original save data for that game is still there. (Maybe I had targeted Disgaea and Marenian Tavern Story individually when I cleared out some space after buying that SD card before, but good to save myself a few days of gameplay just to re-enact something briefly once I'm all done with Earthbound (should be able to resume that today).)

Sure enough, OBS Studio did manage to record it, but the actual file was silent.

Some further troubleshooting revealed that that extra cable was actually silencing the laptop itself, by sending its audio to the TV (obviously to avoid doubling it).

Didn't take long to get my Switch audio to play through OBS, get OBS to record it, and then correct an issue of double-audio. The main solutions were to set up a second output under File > Settings > Audio, and then to set just the Switch to Monitor Only in the Audio Mixer settings.

(Unfortunately, I never took the receipt for that extra cable, but just keeping it should be more convenient than having to switch one of my original cables between the capture card and the laptop itself, whenever I want to show Mom anything on Crunchyroll or record something like Xenoblade Chronicles 2, exclusive to such a system too current to host ROMhacks of games for.)
