Sep. 30th, 2025 05:50 amThe other day, Aunt Marie texted me about a package she sent for "Mom's Christmas". I asked whether she meant her "birthmas" or Christmas itself in a full few months. She asked me what day her birthday is, which is the 25th, and apparently knew she was still on Rome at that time, so she asked me to save it for Christmas.
Yesterday afternoon, I checked Signal upon concluding a nap, found that she had texted me again almost an hour earlier to expect it, and then heard the deliveryman drop it off at our front door. Stowed it away in my closet.
Mom found out about it through camera footage shortly after coming home, and asked me what was going on. I showed her the original text exchange, where I Marie had also asked me if I wanted anything myself for Christmas.
She soon asked me not to suggest anything so expensive as a Steam Deck.
This came up again during a drive to the barber shop in Patchogue. She asked me if there are any practical reasons I would want one of those, and I mentioned having cited a few here on my blog, which she had been too busy to follow in Rome.

Following my haircut, we finally took a chance to check out Reese's 1900 almost right next door. She got a regular cheeseburger, and I got a 1900 Burger for my main course.
She mentioned catching up here while waiting for me in the car, and went on to specify that this planned trip to an event in Canada, something we've discussed a few times so far, was what she already had on mind for my Christmas gift, and I said that I'd be willing to spend my own money on a Steam Deck if I don't end up getting one for Christmas, after I've had a few months to think it over (and also to play through both The World Ends With You and Xenoblade Chronicles 2 in the meantime). As far as separately-paid games go, not only is Steam where most games on my hitlist reside (for after I sort out the inaugural five), but I already have quite a handful of those from years ago (two of which I actually played as recently as throughout 2024).
