Sep. 16th, 2007 07:27 amYesterday, I beat the main part of Dark Cloud. Previously, I stated that I wasn't going to play the Demon Shaft. I changed my mind about that. It's the only way to give Osmond a fair chance to evolve his weapons, and it also more than compensates for the absence of backfloor keys in the Gallery of Time (which in that case, were supposed to be the Flapping Duster). Speaking of backfloor keys, I got two of them (Crystal Eyeballs) on the first floor last night, and I've got quite a few gemstones so far as I've continued playing the game this morning.
Also, even though there is no canon plot pertaining to the Demon Shaft, that particular dungeon is mentioned in chapter 6 (if I'm right) Atlamillia, Darksbane's novelization of the game. This suggests that maybe, just *maybe*, the author might apply some kind of plot to it (or at least some rationale for Toan and co to explore it).

Last week, when I wrote about playing this game, I mentioned in particular the idea of using birthstones. I've been meaning to go into detail about how I'd apply them to future fanfiction, but first, let's have a look at their real origin.
According to Wikipedia's birthday article, the idea seems to have originated from biblical times. According to the Breastplate of Aaron, referred to in Exodus 39, lines 10 through 14:
10 Then they mounted four rows of precious stones on it. In the first row there was a ruby, a topaz and a beryl;
11 in the second row a turquoise, a sapphire and an emerald;
12 in the third row a jacinth, an agate, and an amethyst;
13 in the fourth row a chrysolite, an onyx and a jasper. They were mounted in gold filigree settings.
14 There were twelve stones, one for each of the names of the sons of Israel, each engraved like a seal with the name of one of the twelve tribes.
...Okay, so some of these differ from the chart above those lines. Don't worry, though. The chart has exactly the same twelve minerals that can be found in Dark Cloud.

Now, here's how I'd apply the birthstones to the following fanfics:
[Modified on October 5, 2007]
Monster Collection Chronicles (my future Mon Colle Knights ficseries)
Two things. One is that two samples of each of these stones were created in Mech World, for the specific task of sealing away Giygas (chaotic energy) while it was still wreaking havoc in Mon World. Once their job was finished, the Giygas Crystals (as the stones were called) were brought to a golden brick room with no doors, so as to prevent Giygas from re-escaping. Each contains a smaller sample of gold (for sealing etherial elements) or silver (for physical elements).
Ruby: Contains Fire- (gold) and Rock-Giygas respectively.
Aquamarine: Water- and Poison-Giygas.
Topaz: Thunder and Insect.
Emerald: Grass and Wood.
Sapphire: Ice and Blade.
Garnet: Earth and Fighting.
Pearl: Psychic and Steel.
Amethyst: Dark and Ghost.
Peridot: Light and Night.
Turquoise: Plasma and Mech.
Opal: Wind and Flying.
Diamond: Time and Gold.
The other purpose that birthstones serve is that they can modify battle spells when held out by the person using that spell.
Ruby: Fire. Self-explanatory.
Aquamarine: Water. Can be scalding, freezing, or room-temperature.
Topaz: Electricity. Self-explanatory.
Emerald: Grass. Can drain moisture from enemies.
Sapphire: Ice. Freezes an enemy on contact.
Garnet: Earth. Converts a spell into mud, sand, or shards of rock.
Pearl: Psychic. Can put an enemy to sleep, confuse them, etc.
Amethyst: Darkness. Black light surrounds everyone until the spell being used is completed.
Peridot: Light. Surrounds everyone in blinding light until the spell is completed.
Turquoise: Plasma. Converts a spell into electrified gas.
Opal: Wind. Self-explanatory.
Diamond: Time. Stops time so that enemies cannot evade an attack. Time resumes when spell is completed.
Digimon Royale (as we'll call my Digimon fanfic from now on)
Gemstones in this fanfic would have the same use as they did in Dark Cloud, except that they're applied to Digimon. They enhance a Digimon's stats, raise their elemental immunities, and makes them stronger against certain types of Digimon. (I'll decide what properties each stone enhances when I'm good and ready to.)
Tiara Grid Run
Twelve of the 22 Zones that Tiara must complete are named after birthstones. All the Zones are as follows:
[[Volcanic Ruby]]
[[Aquamarine]]
[[Electric Topaz]]
[[Emerald Grass]]
[[Arctic Sapphire]]
Brawl Hall
Toxic Ruin
[[Garnet Earth]]
[[Turquoise Flight]]
[[Psychic Amethyst]]
Giant Anthill
[[Diamond Fortress]]
[[Pearl Cemetary]]
Dragon's Birth
Pitch Black
Metallic Mine
[[Holy Peridot]]
Neon Plasma
Wooden Mansion
[[Opal Wind]]
Blade Storm
Mechapolis
This list is slightly different from when I told Jake about it. Also, I know that some of the gemstone names don't match the element that they're given in MCC, but I thought this list up first before reassigning some elements for that ficseries. Please ask me for details if you have questions about any of the Zones. I don't feel like explaining it here.
There. Glad to finally have all of that off my chest.
