According to KaioShin on the ROMhacking.net forum, it is possible to decipher hexadecimal in order to modify the game engine for SMW2: Yoshi's Island. However, when I asked Brian about it yesterday morning, he said that for what I'm trying to do, I might as well make my own game. Even so, I still continued looking for tutorials on hex editing, but none of them went much farther than learning how to count in hex.
That same night, I even spoke to Robjoe across MSN, and he said the same thing that Brian did. In fact, he even said that he never attempted such a massive project before, and that's basically where I dropped the subject. This was the second time I ever contacted him, but the first actual conversation I've had with him. We spoke about our Thanksgiving, what we've been doing recently, our relationships with our siblings, etc. I even invited him to read SMW2: Yoshi's Island rewritten and to view Hikari's pic, but what he said was something along the lines of "Well I will say this: people look less odd without big, coneshaped noses." That brought us to talking about the Snowboard Kids game series for a bit. I then wrapped it up by giving him the link to this blog, before saying bye and letting Marie use the computer.
Marie works at the library on Mondays, Fridays, and Saturdays. Today's a good day to come to the library and pick up some books on how to design video games and possibly how to read hexadecimal.
Now for some stuff about the Kendo Rage/Makeruna Makendou series. As far as I know, there were three games and an anime series for that fandom. The first two games were ported to the Super Famicom/Super NES, under the respective titles Makeruna Makendou (a side-scroller) and Makeruna Makendou 2: Kimero Youkai Souri (a fighting game). The third game was ported to the PC-FX, under the name Makeruna Makendou Z. We North Americans only had immediate access to the first game, which upon American release, was retitled Kendo Rage.
Now about the main character. Most of us American gamers know her as Jo (short for Josephine). According to both Wikipedia and this website (which appears in the Wiki-page's External Links section), her original name was either Mai Tsurugino or Hikari Tsurugino respectively. Furthermore, the character that we play as in Kendo Rage (orange hair and outfit) looks nothing like the character on the Japanese box art (depicted in the latter website) or in Makeruna Makendou 2 (brunette w/ blue and white outfit). In Makeruna Makendou Z, there are three human playable characters (Hikari, Mai, and Saya, plus their dog Sabi), and none of them look anything like the character from Kendo Rage. One of them is the same aforementioned brunette girl, but I have no way to tell which girl has which name.
Isn't it all wierd? For some odd reason, even in Japan, the character on the Makeruna Makendou box art and the character in the actual game have completely different designs. The only way to determine who got it right with "Jo's" original name is to translate MM (which by the way, has a completely different story from KR). I, personally, went with the redhead girl when writing SMW2: Yoshi's Island rewritten, and assigned her the name Hikari, though part of me finds the brunette girl to be cuter than the redhead. (Maybe I'll make different versions of the Yoshi's Island hack when it comes to doing so, one for redhead Hikari, one for brunette Hikari.)
