Rant #2: Tiara Boobowski never appeared in any completed Sonic the Hedgehog games. Nor did Mighty the Armadillo appear within the Chaotix since after Knuckles Chaotix was made.

Two nights ago, before we ate dinner, Marie and Dad were watching yet another mean reality show called Party Mamas. While we were talking about it at dinner, Dad mentioned that he missed the times when the old people had an actual role on TV. Nowadays, in the name of marketability, the old people are usually not invited on these shows, and assuming they are, they're never shown on camera.

Everything that goes on on TV is done for money. After we finished eating dinner, I suggested that maybe if TV shows weren't made for profit, people would be more free to make what they want. The Angry Video Game Nerd and people who write fanfiction are perfect examples of people whose (primary) drive for what they put out isn't money. I also brought up myself as an example, citing my ficseries as driven solely by the pleasure of writing it. Dad did listen, but seemed to have missed the point, and asked what if someone came along and offerred me tens of thousands of dollars to turn my ficseries into an animated series. My first answer was that I'd reject it because people in the TV industry are known to change lots of stuff behind the creator's back. (This is exactly the case with lots and lots of anime, such as Digimon, Mon Colle Knights, One Piece, and Nausicaa and the Valley of Wind.) Dad said that if I'm ever given such an offer, I should at least ask for some time to consider whether or not to accept it, but accepting it is most likely a good idea because with the amount of money I get, I would be able to retire immediately and pursue my own interests free of hassle. If I don't take the money, someone else will steal my works and publish them to make that money, which means I'll have no control over it anyway.

Actually, a fanfic is not a completely original story. The whole point behind fanfiction is to add to existing canon of games, anime, movies, etc., or in some cases simply to use existing characters and worlds in what's called an Alternate Universe. In my case, Monster Collection Chronicles is a continuation of Mon Colle Knights, which was created by Akahori Satoru, so I can't publish my works, and neither can anyone else except Satoru. The conversation pretty much ended there for the night, but did continue the next day.

...........................................................................

Yesterday morning, before the bus to school came, I still had another half hour left to play Pokemon Pearl, so I fought one more trainer in the Snowpoint City gym. After I finished, I saved the game twice, but shut the game off while it was saving the second time. I then realized that the game might have been erased, and when I turned it back on, I got a message saying that the saved data was corrupted, and the game will continue from the save state before that. At least it wasn't deleted outright, but from now on, I can't try to cram in a trainer battle if I only have half an hour left with the game.

Yesterday, I had the first sessions of Economics and Health each. During Health, we discussed the six dimensions of health, which are physical, mental, social, emotional, spiritual, and environmental. While we discussed the last of the six, Dr. Boffert asked us to come up with an explanation why, assuming we find an identical planet to Earth next week, we still wouldn't be able to leave our own planet. A lot of us came up with all kinds of reasons, but they didn't hold up. Dr. Boffert then explained that the reason is because the vast majority of us aren't fit to endure zero gravity. Astronauts go through lots and lots of physicals before they are sent into space, and if the rest of us don't start taking good care of our planet, we're fucked!

I reconsidered the whole day as to whether or not I would accept an offer for a huge sum of money in exchange for the making of my ficseries into an animated series, even by the very person who created Mon Colle Knights in the first place. In fact, when I first arrived on campus, I read about copyright conflicts pertaining to fanfiction on Wikipedia, and I also gave this essay a read. This is something I later discussed with Mom on the way home from a dentist appointment I had:

First of all, what I'm planning to write is nothing like the original MCK anime. Whereas Mon Colle Knights was lighthearted and relied on lots of slapstick, facial, and dialogue-based comedy (even during the few times when it was generally dark), Monster Collection Chronicles is going to be mostly serious, dark, gory, and generally more realistic than the anime, although canon characters (such as Professor Hiragi and Prince Eccentro) would keep their original comical dielects so as to keep in character. Because of this drastic change from what Satoru originally intended (and there are few times when this isn't the case), if he were to by any chance notice my ficseries, it would only be fair to allow him to change things as he would see fit (if he even wanted to make such a continuation of MCK).

A similar existing example that I brought up involves the much more renowned James Bond books, which were remade into movies. When Ian Flemming wrote the original books, he didn't have the idea of explosions and car chases in mind, just a nice plot to follow along with. The people who made the movie versions added all that stuff in to make the movies more attractive. Neither me nor Mom knows how Flemming would've reacted upon seeing or knowing about such changes, although she did say that it would've been an interesting thing to find out. In any case, though, he was still given credit for writing the original books, and the movie producers did keep in mind that anyone who wanted to see something much more natural could read the books. If an offer were to come to me to have my ficseries turned into canon, regardless of how much money I'm offerred, I'd ask that I at least be given credit for writing the authentic works.

While Mom was making dinner, I promised her that I'd link to the info pertaining to Monster Collection Chronicles, so here are:

the summaries for each fic (December 20, 2007 of this blog),

profiles and backgrounds for my own characters (Dec. 21, 2007), and

the relevant terminology (Dec 23, 2007).

The anime didn't really have much of a plot. Most of it was just filler that revolved around Mondo, Rockna, and Professor Hiragi competing against the power-hungry Prince Eccentro for the six canon Monster Items. However, there was a subplot that involved two characters in particular, one being the pseudo-evil angel Zaha (Gabriolis in the U.S. version), and the other being the power-hungry demon Redda. The former character's story is explained by Adalia Glenys in the lj-community Rokumon Sekai, but the final canon battle involving Redda and the original competing teams (which spans for the last five or six episodes) is most relevant to my ficseries, and can also be read about on TV.com's MCK episode guide (starting with Episode 40: Redda Returns. Please disregard Episode 41: Lovestar Can Help Too; it's been out of place for ages).

Moving on, I finally found an ISO copy of Makeruna Makendou Z last night, after days of ending each night hoping against hope to find the game. It was at a site called Dope Roms, although that site didn't have ISOs of Game Tengoku or Snowboard Kids Plus. All I need to do now is download a PC-FX emulator, hope that the game actually works, and if it does, alert TheNewX about it since he lost his own ISO copy. As for actually playing it... well, I still got plenty of stuff left to do in Pokemon Pearl, but at least now I have MMZ for when I do finish playing Pokemon.
