Sep. 26th, 2005 07:28 amYesterday was Mom's birthday, so Dad got her a card which he wanted me, Brian, and Marie to sign. On the front, it had a Far Side cartoon with a cat sitting under a tree, and a nest full of birds on a branch directly above its head, and it said "What to do today, what to do?" On the inside, it said "Life is full of surprises." Coincidentally, there was another Far Side reference in Ziggy yesterday, in which Ziggy asks some cows for directions back to his own comic.
When I went outside yesterday morning, I saw an unusual white bird, and I got Mom and Dad to come see it. Dad said it was a homing pigeon, and he knew it was someone's pet because it had a black band on each of its legs. Mom asked me to make sure Sabrina, our cat, wasn't around, while she got a waffle and some bird seed to feed to it. The bird didn't eat any of it, but it did walk slowly into the Bernacki's frontyard, where there were no cats. When we came back inside, that's when Marie woke up, and we told her about it.
Today at work, Abby from CENY came to see me, and I told her about my promotion and my possibility of becoming a clerk at some other store. Also, according to my receipt, I got a perfect shift, from 11:00 A.M. to 3:00 P.M. (or, 11:00-15:00, as the receipt reads). When Mom came, Marie was with her, and Mom asked me to buy them two milkshakes, one vanilla and the other chocolate. They gave me some money, and the two shakes cost $5.49 total.
When we got home, we saw the bird in front of the kitchen window. Mom told us it might've been thirsty, because it seemed to be trying to get water from the hose. Later on, though, Marie told Dad that the bird was dying, but there was nothing he could do to help it. She eventually had to bury it.
During the commercial of tonight's episode of The Simpsons, someone switched to Channel 13, and there was this show about life in the rainforest. The first thing we saw on the show was this species of ant called the bullet ant. We learned that teenage boys who live in the rainforest have to wear gloves containing these ants as a test of manhood. They have to wear them for ten minutes, and when they finish, their hands are paralyzed and tremble helplessly for days.
Moving on, some of the other species we saw included sloths, killer bees, strangler plants, and tarantulas. The person doing the research for this show also had something called a spidercam, which consisted of a tiny video camera on top of a toy motorcycle, which was moved by a cord attached to the back of it. Its purpose was to explore the tiny burroughs where spiders live, and which could not be explored regularly.
(Another coincidence yesterday is that the half of the following episode of Family Guy took place in a rainforest.)
