Feb. 29th, 2008 07:28 amWhen Dad came home yesterday, he was about to make his first daily trip to the Woodenboat forum, but the computer started freezing up on him. He called Mom to tell him what was going on with the computer, and I went to him as well. He also noticed that fake Saturn emulator that's been minimized for some time now, and asked me what it was. I told him I didn't know what it was. What's ironic is that just moments earlier, I had a conversation with Jake, and the computer didn't have this problem. Moments later, Dad lectured me about going onto crappy sites, telling me that just one click into such a site is exactly how computers become exposed to viruses.
Dad had to reboot the computer to bring the hard drive back into working order. There have been at least two occasions in the past where our computer broke down, we had to go some number of weeks without a computer, and then when we got a new one, a lot of files were gone. If our computer failed this time (which it didn't, thankfully), it wouldn't matter whether or not I got punished; I would've still had to live with the guilt of causing a million irreplaceable files to get deleted.
After Dad got the computer back up to working order, Mom told me that our virus software expired, and told me pretty much to stay offline until she can reinstall it. On the bright side, though, we no longer have that emulator minimized, and our hard drive is able to read CDs once again.
About half an hour later, Dad apologized for getting mad at me, but still warned me to be careful where I'm going when surfing the net. To just do whatever I want online is like playing with fire, and if our computer did crash, it would be almost as if our house burned down.
Later on, Mom said it was okay if I went onto DeviantArt, LiveJournal, VGMusic, or other legitimate websites. Downloading stuff is gonna have to wait, though... or, now that it came to mind, I told Mom that I would take care of that at school, since there are lots of computers in the computer lab.
