Sep. 30th, 2008 05:59 amAll the bosses at the end of Moon Flower Palace were easy enough for me to take on, what with some of my weapons (especially the Grade Zero) being extremely powerful. I still lost to the Dark Element, though, because there's a time limit and he's invincible half the time. I just had to knock off the last centimeter of his life bar, but didn't get a chance to do so. Oh well, I've been playing Dark Cloud 2 long enough, and I decided I wasn't gonna put myself through all that again for now.
Jake showed me some website about someone's gameplay experience with Pokemon Mystery Dungeon for the Game Boy Advance. I read the first two entries, and the Meowth coincidentally also happens to go by the name Jake. He then told me that he wants to write a fanfic for it, but has had trouble deciding on each member for his party. I rolled some dice to decide for him after we signed off, but I'll let it be a surprise for when we meet again on MSN.

I've looked up Game Boys and Game Boy games on Ebay, and for the most part, even game lots for the Game Boy go for less than ten dollars. However, I still hesitate to buy anything because I haven't even gotten my first paycheck for the semester, and the Game Boy Color and even the Game Boy Advance have backwards compatibility. I don't even own a that many games for the GBC, GBA, or the Nintendo DS, nor did I own more than four games for the Game Gear before I got rid of it more than a decade ago. I remember feeling similar nolstalgia for volumes 69 through 79 of Nintendo Power (the first year's worth of NP magazine that I ever read), but that didn't take long to wear off. Therefore, I've set some criteria to fulfill before I decided to buy a regular Game Boy and a whole bunch of games for it:
1) Chronicles of 7th Grade is completed.
2) Wario Land on the Virtual Boy is completed.
3) Getter Love!! still hasn't reappeared on Ebay.
4) Enough time has passed for me to get at least one paycheck.
5) I'm still nolstalgic for the days of the Game Boy.
So, I downloaded the game and a Virtual Boy emulator called Red Dragon while I was at work (yes, during my shift, as my supervisor had nothing left for me to do during the last half hour, and I dare not try this at home anymore). I even tested it out at the library, but there are a few inconveniences with it, which I'll go into soon enough.
Okay, let's look over each Wario game in existence (minus the Wario Ware subseries and spinoffs such as Wario Blast and Wario Woods):
Wario Land: Super Mario Land 3 (Game Boy): This waits until I've completed Wario Land VB, before I decide whether to buy a whole bunch of GB games and a Game Boy, buy just the one game, or play it on an emulator.
Wario Land 2 (Game Boy): Same as above.
Wario Land (Virtual Boy): To me, this came across as a natural first choice. Quite by coincidence, the time that I started reading Nintendo Power was the same time that the Virtual Boy had been released.
So, I downloaded Red Dragon (the emulator), and guess what? There's no sound at all. Only two other emulators exist for the Virtual Boy: Reality Boy (which RD is actually an upgrade for), and Virtual-E (which has sound support, but can only play six games, not including Wario Land).
Coming home, I looked up Ebay auctions for real Virtual Boys, but they go for $50 to $200. However, even though they are expensive, are awkward to play games on, and run on batteries, legitimate Virtual Boys do have their own advantages. Not only do they have sound, but I probably won't have to share it with anyone else like I have to share the computer. There's also the fact that the Virtual Boy uses two screens to create the illusion of depth, something which a PC is simply incapable of.
As a bonus, here's a link to the commercial that I remember seeing for Wario Land VB. I remember seeing it back in the early part of 4th grade.

Wario Land 3 (Game Boy Color): Seeing as this is a GBC game and I have a GBC, I might just buy this one alone (or download it). For now, though, I'd like to refrain from spending money, especially since I've already spent enough of it last summer on so much Pokemon-related bullshit.
Wario Land 4 (Game Boy Advance): I still have Visual Boy (a GBA emulator), and could download this from DopeRoms if I wanted to. Wait a minute, did the other games have "themed" worlds? I guess I can accept that, as it's also been the case with certain Mario games (most notably, Super Mario Bros. 3).
Wario World (GameCube): First of all, I do own a GameCube, so I could play a legitimate copy of this game if I wanted to buy one. There are few (if any) websites that offer GameCube ISOs, but even if I could find one, anything in 3D is more conveniently played on a console than on an emulator.
Now, looking this one up on Wikipedia, I've just read that each world (and there are only four) consists of two levels and a boss fight. That's kinda short. I'll have to see about this one once I've beaten other Wario games.
Wario: Master of Disguise (Nintendo DS): Don't know what to say about this one. I do own a Nintendo DS, but somehow, this still doesn't seem like a natural first choice.
Wario Land: Shake It (Wii): I asked Mom if it would be possible to buy me a Wii for Christmas if I decide to buy an Ultimate Girls DVD with my own money instead. Mom said that she probably can't afford one, what with Dad being currently out of work. Oh well. Maybe for my birthday half a year from now.
