Sep. 5th, 2008 07:30 amYesterday in Intro to Sociology, Dr. Mizzi mentioned that people in minority groups tend to marry within their ethnic groups. She said that she was born to Irish-American parents, and they became furious when she married a Maltese man. I raised my hand and asked if she got disowned by her parents. She misheard me and thought I said "stoned", and basically said that stoning wasn't such a common punishment in European cultures as it is in countries like India and Pakistan. In the latter examples, there were instances of people marrying by their own choice, and being stoned to death by their community. Someone then corrected her about what I asked, and she said that she wasn't disowned, but her mother previously had been.
Yeah, I understand that disownership is a pretty harsh thing to go through, but I commend anyone who had taken it for what they believe in. The most notable example would be in Blondie, where Dagwood was disowned by his upper-class parents for marrying outside his class. (Way to go, Dag! You really stood up for yourself with that move!)
