Mar. 12th, 2009 07:47 amI had an appointment with Dr. Perret yesterday. Nothing very notable about that session, but I did have Mom bring me to Toys 'R' Us so I could download Regigigas to my copy of Pokemon Pearl.
Later on, before I went to bed, I contacted Jake through MSN. I tried making small talk with him, but he was just rather surly. He said that he's busy and his entire body hurts, which is why he wasn't in the mood to talk. Not that I had much to say anyway, just been dying to break the ice since our dispute a week ago. Well, I can't blame him for not wanting to talk, but who knows how long it'll be before either of us have anything that's actually worth a convo?
Last night, when Dad got up in the middle of the night to stoke up the fireplace and eat some Special K, I got up to ask him a few things. From what he told me in the past, he never went to college, so after he left high school, he had a job at digging clams. I asked him how long it took and what it took before he could start his own business building cabinets. He said that with the business he runs today, he just started small and worked his way to bigger tasks as time went on.
Dad asked me why I had brought that up, and I told him that I was considering dropping out of college to possibly find some job at an office. Even though the work would be monotonous and the job wouldn't pay much, at least I would have all my downtime to myself (save for paying bills) instead of having to go to the library to take out books so that I could write term papers. Dad told me that it is common for people to consider saying "the hell with it" when something becomes frustrating, but I'm too close to graduating to give up now. He also said that working eight straight hours a day, only having a break for lunch, would be a shock to me, since I've never worked that long a day. Furthermore, at this time, even people who have experience and a degree are being laid off of work, which means too much competition in the job market.
(I didn't mention this to him, but I should note that years ago, before I got my official job at McDonald's, I would sometimes work at the hospital for Mom. The work was mundane, and working there on any given day required me to leave home when she leaves, and I could only go home when her shift was over. Of course, that was so many years ago, and I *did* have some non-lunch breaks, so I'd say Dad's right about a full-time job being too much for me right now.)

Finally, having looked back to that PC-FX auction with all the console's games, I decided to compare my money situation of back then (February 17, 2008) to that of right now. At that time, I only had $150 in the bank, which means I have $65 more in the bank then I did a year ago. However, I could have saved up to $79 in the long run if I decided to buy that PC-FX... that is, unless it got too many bids (in which case, it wouldn't even have been an option). Yeah, the cost of buying any individual game or console on Ebay does tend to vary, and I'm lucky enough to have bought a PC-FX for almost half the total cost that they normally go for, but with that first auction, there probably couldn't be a sweeter deal than that. Having been packed with the entire PC-FX catalogue of games instead of just Queen of Queens, I could've had some fun and reapt back some cash seeing which games could potentially sell.
So, why the hell did I miss out on it? Because I was hoping I could play Makeruna! Makendou Z for free on an emulator, and I was also hoping I could eventually hack the game so that all text and voice-acting would be in English. Well, I was successful enough to at least play the game, but Magic Engine FX has crappy sound quality, ROMhacking turned out to be way beyond my ability, and when I decided I've had enough with MEFX, I decided it would be easier to just buy the real game and console than to figure out how to run Mednafen or Xe.
Let me tell you, ROMhacking is a can of worms I doubt I ever want to open again. That's exactly part of the reason why I want to start Retro Savior, inc. whenever it becomes feasible, as well as the reason I'd like to create a YouTube-only voice fandub of the game. With Retro Savior, I could write up contracts with other companies, with which I could potentially obtain the source code of any game legally, instead of having nothing but hexadecimal to figure out and work with.
And, while we're on this topic of Japanese games, I do understand that, for the first time ever, someone did complete a translation hack of Welcome to Pia Carrot for the PC-FX. You can read about it here if you want to. I did watch the beginning of the demo, but in my opinion, it still sucks. For the most part, I personally find Japanese voice acting to be very annoying, and honestly, I'd rather be playing Sin & Punishment: Successor of the Earth on the Nintendo 64 or the Wii Virtual Console, than this text-only translation hack on any PC-FX emulator.
