According to Bulbapedia, it's been with us since Generation I. Someone told me that Pokemon can be cloned through a glitch in the trading process. I had already bought myself some event-only Pokemon for $12, thinking to not let them go to waste, and traded a second Toys 'R' Us Arceus over to someone at the Bulbagarden Trade Center. As it turns out, that person already had two of those.
I found an an anti-cloning club, where someone described the concept of trading Pokemon as an economy of sorts, which got deflated with the exploitation of the cloning glitch. I compared this whole thing to YouTube and ROM sites, under the name McKnight.
Unfortunately, there is no way to tell cloned Pokemon apart from non-clones. Whenever I decide to trade through the Wi-Fi Union Room, the number of trades I perform will depend on how many times I land heads with a coin each time I pass a PokeCenter, and only after I obtain the National Dex. (Buying these Pokemon from past events will depend on landing a double-5. Trading at the GTS will only take place when I need to evolve a certain Pokemon, until I have physical contact with DukeBurger.) I'm not gonna look for any Pokemon in particular; just gonna see what people want or offer at the BGTC.
As for what I've already obtained through Wi-Fi, I of course have no way to tell clones apart from originals. So, instead of just starting a new game with the Diamond card that I have, I'm gonna sell that one on Ebay after I complete HeartGold or SoulSilver, and then buy a new copy of Diamond.
-----
With Diamond now aborted, I did consider trading Deoxys, Shaymin, Regigigas, Arceus, and Pichu from my copy of Pearl onto Diamond, and then starting a new game with Pearl. However, awkward as it was to use a GameShark for some Pokemon, I probably shouldn't burn bridges. Let's review:
Well, it was a good thing that I saw the prerequisite for confronting Regigigas well in advance. I never would have imagined until then that I would need three out-of-game legendary Pokemon in order to get one that was new at the time, or that such gimmicks as the PAL Park or the dual-slot mode would even exist. *That* was the reason I bought Pokemon Ruby and FireRed, even after having completed Sapphire and LeafGreen. (I already had a copy of Emerald, which had an aborted file on it.)
Well, the copies of Ruby, FireRed, and Emerald still had some legitimately obtained Pokemon on them. In Emerald, I still had my Mudkip and a Kecleon that I captured with a legitimate capture ball among other things. Ruby came with all kinds of Pokemon that are not obtainable within that game, including an Umbreon, a Huntail, and some starters (some of which were evolved). In FireRed, I was able to immediately obtain a Charizard (nicknamed Bardoch!!, before I changed its name back), a Jolteon (which I bred with a Ditto; legitimate enough), and all three legendary birds only slightly leveled up. Oh, and let's not forget the promotional GameCube disk for Jirachi WishMaker, which I bought and downloaded a Jirachi onto Ruby with.
Something that I did not have immediate access to, though, were the three legendary golems that I would have needed to confront Regigigas. I never got that far in Emerald until then, and in Ruby, they had been either discarded or traded. That is where the GameShark comes in. And I bought one specifically for the Game Boy Advance, not the Nintendo DS. It was either that or just continue playing Emerald legitimately, when I was already going to be starting over with it at some point anyway, and then the golems would have given me trouble capturing them.
So, while I was at it, I figured I might as well do the same with other pre-Gen IV Pokemon that I would not be able to find in Pearl, creating 99 fake Master Balls in each game in the process. Well, yeah, to this day I still don't have any physical contact with other Pokemon players, and I didn't have the Wi-Fi feature set up on my DS until just last summer, which ruled out trading globally.
(On a side note, a Scyther (Diamond-only at the time) was one of the Pokemon I captured in FireRed, although this was with a perfectly legitimate Safari Ball, since I found it at the Safari Zone. There was one on Ruby, nicknamed Blade, but I decided not to bother with that one since I prefer Pokemon without nicknames.)
So anyway, all of this was right after I downloaded Deoxys at GameStop, and I'd say it was a necessary evil for the time. In Ruby, FireRed, and Emerald, I would slightly balance things out by using the GameShark only to access the secret locations. While there still is potential to receive special items for the Gen IV games, we know for a fact that there will never be any further events for the GBA games. I was already too late for most of them when I played Sapphire the first time around, which was in September 2006.
With Diamond, I'm going to migrate six dice-decided Pokemon from each of the GBA games, and will go out of my way to include one copy of each of the golems.
In Platinum, I won't even have to enter Snowpoint Temple (regular Regigigas' home), because once I trade my event Regigigas from Pearl, I'll be able to find each of the lesser golems elsewhere. Even with people cloning Pokemon, I still do intend to buy a separate set of used GBA games for it to migrate Pokemon from, although I'm not going to buy any games that have a complete set of shiny Pokemon. The copies of Ruby and FireRed that I bought during the summer of 2008 had a realistic enough set of Pokemon for me to trust that the original owners did not cheat in any way, shape, or form.
-----
Moving on, I also bought several new copies of Pokemon Ranger, and still plan on buying one more which will end today. In the meantime, I'm also going to sell my current copy of Ranger so I can make a few bucks back.
Also, despite the amount of money I spent yesterday, I actually have $5 more in my bank account than I had when I deposited all my paychecks and Christmas money. I told Mom, and she explained that I receive money every month to pay for school.
