Spoke to Jake on MSN after reading the comment he left yesterday afternoon. He told me that a friend told him that Mega Man X7 is the worst game they ever played. I looked for reviews of it, and while it has mixed reviews on Amazon.com, it is generally the Scrappy game for its series, not least of all because of the awkward controls and the fact that its debut character Axl is hardly useful at all aside from getting items.
Let's face it: In any collection, compilation, or series of just about anything, something is bound to be either a Scrappy, an Old Shame, or both, and even among those that qualify as neither, everyone is going to have favorites and un-favorites. Meanwhile, stuff is bound to be either missing or outright omitted that, while there is likely personal or legitimate reasons for such, will leave some people thinking that the set would still be more complete with it. This blog is no exception; when I make a special entry for its 10th anniversary, marking down each game and anime referred to in each entry since the beginning, I will not include content that I had deleted at some point after posting, although I will still acknowledge in general having written such in the first place. The MCC/Cult team pic is a rare example of something I consider having true integrity, but that's only as far as the aesthetics and the characters' common role in question go, and because there are only twelve of them in all (not counting other children such as Lei Lei, Beginner, Luke, Ryo, Alpha/Hitomi, or Ashura, whose roles are different); for characterization, one of them is bound to be a scrappy, not the least likely being Katsuo (even though he is now set to develop for the better, unlike in the past).
Anyway, back on topic, gameplay issues aside, there are also inconsistencies that both X7 and X8 cause between X6 and Zero, and also issues related to Sigma, who was supposed to be dysfunctional beyond fixing upon being revived in X6. Everyone has their own line to draw as to how wallbangerrific a work of fiction can be while still being worth consumption, but anyone with any respect for himself would draw that line somewhere and abort if the work in question crosses that line (unless they actively intend to review it). Chelle is a whole lot better than I am at determining if, say, something that defies logic happens anyway because the plot, Executive Meddling, or something else demands it (at least while watching, playing, reading, or writing something), but such things do inspire contempt in me when I read about them on TV Tropes & Idioms or anywhere else.
There's that, and then there's the fact that the X series was never meant to continue past X5. X6 was made without franchise creator Keiji Inafune's knowledge or approval, but at least he was able to modify the beginning of Zero in response to the events of that game. So, frankly, it would only be respectful to Inafune to play what was meant to be and go right to the Zero quadrilogy after completing X6. Also helps that I had no intention to begin with to play X Command Mission, since that game has you travel in a set path, thus defeating one of the franchise's core points (ditto for the Legends duology). I still do intend to play Maverick Hunter X for the PlayStation Portable at some point, because even though its rewritten story is inconsistent with stuff already established in the original X series, it is justified by the fact that Inafune did mean to remake all of the first six games in the series, but was only able to remake the first one. (And it doesn't help that he has left Capcom since and is no longer in control of the franchise.)
It occurred to me right after I left GameStop two days ago, that I should have probably also asked if they have Zone of the Enders and ZoE: The 2nd Runner for the Playstation 2. (Jake previously recommended them to me, since he had beaten the first game and I had already beaten The Fist of Mars several times during the mid-00's.) Good thing I plan on making another trip there when we go to the gym today, because that would also double as an opportunity to return X7 and X8.
(There is also another reason why I won't be playing those two games, but I'll keep that a secret for now.)
