Apr. 18th, 2013 06:59 amSet up episode 1 of Lucky Star and chapter 1 of Starbound on my laptop yesterday, and shared them with Uncle Robby and Cousin Adam last night. Left them to read the latter after we all watched the former, and when I came back downstairs to do something, Robby asked me if anything in the chapter happened in the anime. I told him that none of it happened (although there will be references to stuff that did; hell, the very first scene makes two shoutouts to the manga), and that I wrote it. He asked me if I submit it to some website about Lucky Star, and I told him that I submit all fanfiction I write to Fanfiction.net, the site that he was looking at (and some to DeviantArt as well).
He told me that I write really well, and that I should try writing actual books. I told him that I could, but despite the option of changing names so that I can't be sued for copyright infringement, I just so happen to be a fan of Lucky Star that I'd rather stay true to the show. That's why it's called fanfiction; stuff written by fans about works of entertainment that they enjoy.
Robby still suggested that I write books at all. Well, I could; I just don't know what I'd write about that would involve only characters of my own instead of pre-existing ones. I'm not nearly as good at coming up with my own plots as Jake and Chelle are; coming up with the main points, which I already have for Starbound and what was going to be Monster Collection Chronicles, is one thing, but filling in all the rest... I really have no idea where Cult or Starbound are going after their respective prologue and second chapter. Chelle already told me that just thinking of stuff to make happen is pointless if it doesn't lead to any sort of character development or build up to the finale.
Such was exactly the case with SMW2: Yoshi's Island rewritten: Initially, I spent a whole week reading Super Mario fanfiction, looking for ideas of stuff to make happen, and failing miserably. In one of said fanfics, It's Up to Me!, the author outright stated towards the end that s/he was running out of stuff to make happen. That made it pretty obvious that they weren't at all concerned with any complex plot or character development with which to maintain anyone's interest. Weeks later, I finally decide, the hell with trying to come up with anything myself; let's just put Mai, Joe, and Baby Mario through the pre-existing levels and make stuff up as I go along. Ditto with The Furrysitters' Club, which I started writing a year and a half later... and stopped writing after four chapters, having failed to come up with much to make happen.
So, yeah. Once I finally finish and post chapter 2 of Starbound, I'm probably gonna create an outline of Earthbound (just Earthbound, not the other two games), breaking it down into chapters and listing everything in each chapter that actually affects what happens later in the game. That, I hope, will be some kind of template before I ask Chelle to collaborate with me to create some kind of actual plot for Starbound that isn't all about fighting the alien armies and finding mana.
(Still gotta update the Starbound outline, btw. That, I might take care of when I'm home to sit at a desk and use a regular PC instead of having to lay in Cousin Adam's bed with my laptop right in my lap. In the meantime, I'm glad to be able to work on the endgame chapters of the actual fic, after having saved them to my flash drive, without anyone bugging me for shit.)
