Jun. 8th, 2015 06:50 amFound out yesterday that PayPal currently supports Autism Speaks.
Given any number of heinous things AS has pulled off, I am now seeking to minimize my use of PayPal from now on. At some point, I might even empty out my account and close it altogether, so that neither I nor anyone I do business with can indirectly support it. So far, I have created a PIN for Google Wallet and an account for Western Union, and have brought the issue up with the following people:
Mom: Sent her an email with one cent enclosed, and spoke to her in person when she came home with Dad from Patchogue. She says that she'll have to find alternate methods (although I'm responsible for the legwork), though it does help that she doesn't use PayPal that often to begin with.
Jake: Says that PayPal isn't his favorite method for sending payments anyway.
Chelle: Still has yet to get back to me. Regarding commissions, I'm sure she'd agree to seek a different payment method, because her Tumblr blog is where I found out how bad Autism Speaks really is.
Kymyit: Does not own a bank account, which means that PayPal will remain the only feasible method with her. This does leave me wondering if she gets paid in cash or PP credit (assuming she even has a job) instead of checks. More importantly, though, this is the reason why I won't be closing my account right away. Originally contacted agataylor a month ago for the Cibus picseries, but she only got back to me the other day, which is why I commissioned kymyit three days later instead. A few days after agataylor got back to me, I told her that kymyit would be in charge of the whole thing, but given what I've just learned, I think I might just settle for the remaining mains with kymyit and start the project over with aga, using points (to be either donated or bought with debit) as the payment of choice.
[The one I commissioned for Madoka's fic]: Got back to me this morning, and agreed to look for alternate methods herself if Gmail doesn't work for her. (She also did mention being autistic herself.)
Will look into sending an email to PayPal today, about what AS does and why it should not receive donations from anyone. Any online shopping I do from now (including for anything Japanese) on will be done through Amazon, and Ebay will be a very last resort if I have no other options to buy something from. And, since Dad still goes to The Home Depot for stuff either more expensive or altogether unavailable at Lowes, I might consider buying gift cards for him to use there off of My Coke Rewards should any come up. (I'm assuming those will provide money that's already been spent on that one, though it does seem possible that that might also encourage MCR to spend more money on it. Never saw any there aside from sweepstakes, though.) And, I'm also glad I didn't bother with the Coinstar machine at King Kullen the other day, and had been exchanging my recycling money directly for singles during previous visits.
Here is a list of reasons why Autism Speaks needs to go:

And, a list of their current affiliates, so that anyone reading this can consider alternatives to any relevant companies to them listed there:

(For the record, I do respect anyone who sticks with any of AS's affiliates for lack of any practical alternatives. A lot of people use PayPal because it's the most convenient method for them to send online payments, but I'm sure anyone reading this or anything else about AS's destructive practices can cut off something like Lindt (a chocolate company).)
