(no subject)
Aug. 24th, 2015 07:32 amWatched this documentary with Mom, Dad, and Marie yesterday morning, about different peoples who reside high on mountains across the world and how they make their living. Brian was in the porch where he had been sleeping on the futon, and said that he had been listening in as well (while likely either sleeping or doing work on his laptop).
Finally got to treat Brian and Marie to brunch at Jimmy's Eats, with a hundred that Mom lent me. Dad had declined on it the day before (not sure whether he overheard something or Mom actually told him), because he would rather keep his old memories of it untarnished.
Upon arriving there, I let them know that I had a winning lottery ticket to redeem once we finish eating. We actually ended up waiting outside among others for a table, and that became a perfect time to hop over to a nearby gas station. Cashed it in for $1, and then requested a $6 12-way-combination play of WIN4. The cashier apparently didn't know that there was any difference between 50/50 and combination plays like specified on the website. He printed up a ticket for $12, and I asked him to void it since I had asked for the $6 play (or 50¢ play, as specified on the site). From there, given the confusion involved, I thought I might just keep things simple and void my previous roll from a few days ago. (The one single went towards our tip, along with $2 that I had made from recycling. Next game will just be a bi-weekly game, after having rolled a 1 upon eventually coming home.)
(As to why I planned on spending $6 in the first place, that just has to do with the numbers I rolled after Mom gave me $10 worth of allowance for this week and next. With an 8-sided die, I rolled a 4 (for WIN4), another 4 (for a combination play), and then a 5 (for a half-price 12-way play). Rather than limit myself, I tend to just rely on infrequency, since most games just cost $1 anyway, and it also helps that I tend to play only once or twice a week with a weekly $5, only when we happen to go anywhere that does lotto, if even that.)
So anyway, we went inside, and I ordered a stack of three chocolate-chip pancakes and an English muffin. Not much happened, but I did manage to eat everything up, having only had a banana before we left home. Marie also mentioned that Mom and Dad's 30th anniversary is coming up, so we'll be sure to think of something for that.
Brian drove us to the outlets afterwards, and I ended up hanging around with them while they shopped for clothes. Marie then led Brian to this gift shop called The Big Duck, which actually is shaped like a duck. (It even has a page in this book called Roadside Americana that Mom and I bought the other month at Savers. Marie told me when I asked that she actually knew about it for a while because it's famous, even though I had never heard of it myself until then. In any case, good place for Davì to visit on Long Island during Starbound.)
Due to the amount of carbs I had consumed at Jimmy's, I had become increasingly tired after we left, and just did a few little things before having a nap. Felt drowsy even upon waking up, but managed to wake up a little by having a slice of cheese (for protein).
Not much happened for the rest of the day. Brian spent most of the day's remainder working on his laptop, Mom and Dad went to the beach (we three kids declined, and they didn't get a satisfactory experience there), Mom made milkshakes for dessert, I watched an episode of Silicon Valley with everyone else, and Brian and Marie have just left this morning. Not sure about Marie, but Brian at least has planned on spending some time with Grandma Barbara. I was hoping to come with him, but we didn't have time to book a plane seat for me.

Having been to such an obscure landmark (at least by world standards) as the Big Duck got me thinking about why I've planned for Konata and Miyuki to wind up respectively in Connecticut and Virginia in particular during Starbound. That actually came up during a short comment exchange between me and Chelle, coming off from my chat with Mom and Dad at J&R (second comment below the entry).
I mean, no coincidence that Long Island is where I plan to have Davì wind up, and to establish as Patricia's homeplace from before canon, since that's where I happen to live. With the other two, it just seems random now. Virginia is where Dad's extended family lives, but we also have others living in Pennsylvania and New Jersey. Not in Connecticut, though; I can only chalk that up particularly to that one time we got together with Barbara and co., which I described in a cut (along with an earlier trip to Maine) in the entry from after Dad brought me up there in May of 2011 to help an ill friend of his from across the Woodenboat forum. (One of us actually had a timeshare in Shawnee, PA, that we had been to more than once.) And, copying something I wrote in the outline:
I have also toyed with Konata ending up at a place called the Fountain of Youth, located in Ponce de León, Florida. Due partly to nostalgia from having been there with my family in 1995 while visiting my grandfather that summer. It's believed that one can retain their youth by drinking or bathing in the water there, and considering that Konata still looks like a kid even in-universe, there's a perfect tie-in. A problem arises, though, in the fact that this would locate her even further south than Miyuki from where Davì has wound up, which means that Miyuki would find Davì first before Konata, thus possibly negating the time they will unwittingly spend at Hooters. Besides, Connecticut also has its share of nostalgia, and the idea of simply having to cross a relatively small body of water instead of boarding a plane to find someone is unique in its own way.
The aforementioned trip (along with being mentioned offhand in the '11 entry) actually did come up between us while we ate out two nights ago, and it was actually the second of two times I had ever been down there before Grandpa Bob eventually moved in with Uncle Robby. The first was more than a year earlier, at a different house, and both have their share of experiences, but I think I've rambled on enough for right now.
(Since I'm planning to show this entry to Mom and Dad, I should mention regarding the fic that the characters are not on a tour of the world, so much as a journey that involves fighting aliens and visiting places rich with a mysterious energy, on which they seek to meet a certain deity who had once been mortal.)
