Where we sat, there was this mural of the United States of America and all its icons, including the White House, Mt. Rushmore, NASCAR, a Maine lobster, a Nebraska wheat field, a Texas oil rig, the Las Vegas welcome sign, and so on. At some point, I asked them if they'd like to know what it all really represents.
The answer was racism, because I read all too often on Chelle's Tumblr, and even read several magazine articles so far, about how deeply rooted that is in American culture. Dad told me that all countries are racist in some way or another, such as how the Dutch exploit its Indonesian population. (I do understand that the Japanese aren't fond of foreigners of any kind, and something I read recently mentioned that anti-semitism has been part of France since that country's inception.)
Some conversation later, Mom asked me if there's anywhere in the country that I'd like to visit. I declined on anywhere in particular, but did tell her that a visit anywhere might be good for Starbound. At some point, three of the main characters are going to wind up in different states along the east coast, although they are already places we're familiar with (not a coincidence).
(I did read in a newspaper article, only a day or so after I first conceived the fic, that George "Hergé" Remy, author of The Adventures of Tintin, actually took trips to each location pertaining to his work, so that he could illustrate all the details for each scene to reflect their real-life counterparts. Not a luxury I have myself, but something like Google Maps would've likely done wonders for him had such a thing existed back then.)

Date: 2019-07-17 02:02 pm (UTC)Pointing out one thing has problems does not mean denying other things also have problems, so that's not really a direct reply to what you said; dunno full context though.
Anyway, reminds me that discrimination would likely be getting in the way of the Starbound characters as they travel (core cast being Japanese after all), varying per country. China and the US each have their Internet corner and culture, but since Europe has so many languages and Africa + Australia have so few people online, they don't have similar monoliths, so getting that perspective is harder. I can throws in some information on racial attitudes in Europe at least.
If you end up going anywhere that you'll use in the fic : make lots of digital photos you can easily look at while writing (did I say this before? Can't recall). Even if you don't need the same amount of detail as a comic book artist, you might find something random useful. Also, pay attention to prices : is the area a food desert? That's gonna matter when the characters who are cut off from their money source, even if just a day.

2) Channel-Tunnel to France to save Maria's brother Peter from a corrupt therapy center.
3) Paraty, Brazil. This is where Davì joins the party, while Peter is dropped off to live with Davì's family from now on.
4) Ankora, Turkey. Nurşen joins here.
5) Somewhere in Bermuda. This is where they meet with one of the alien generals that they'll fight along the way, and where they will be banished to different parts of the world:
Rokuna: Nunavut, Canada. More specifically, in the area including Arctic Bay (an Inuit village) and Nanisivik (abandoned since '02). This is also where Claire will debut.
Mondo: The Netherlands.
Kagami: Saudi Arabia
Tsukasa: India
Konata: Gilford, Connecticut, USA
Miyuki: Portsmouth, Virginia, USA
Maria: Libya
Davì: Montauk Point, New York, USA
Nurşen: Sudan
Where Davì ends up is just miles away from the Hooters restaurant where he, Konata, and Miyuki will end up working (under hypnosis of some sort) after the three of them regroup. Said restaurant is also where the next member, Desiré (born in Mexico), is currently working.
Then, after the whole team regroups, they will return to Japan for a short while to figure out some cryptic clues some of the others had received in Magicant. During their time there, they will need to take a side-trip to Germany, where they will finally recruit Robin. And then, back to Japan for New Year's.
Once all is said and done there, I currently have the path bound through Argentina, Madagascar, Poland, Mauritania, South Africa, Yemen, and China, currently as the locations where either they find a mana spot each or they get dropped off from Magicant. I don't know what's actually going to happen along the way, and it may very well change depending on how things actually pan out. (For example, if Ivo were to accompany Tsukasa to a mana spot post-split and then leave before she regroups with anyone else, that will be one less location to visit after New Year's.)

Regarding what you said about money, I do plan on something about that arising when the party visits the UK. It will turn out that the different currencies Rokuna had received on her birthday did not include pounds, given how geographically small Great Britain is and thus how unlikely it would have seemed they'd wind up there of all places. Maria would then be able to help them with that once she comes in.
Anyway, yeah, will definitely keep all that on mind, especially if I do end up going anywhere.
