Tried to redraw this particular image of Mami and Nagisa as Cibi yesterday morning. Boring as all-frontal pics may be, I am just too ill-prepared to draw even those.

Brought it up with Brian on the way home from that bagel place just down the street, and he told me that this is the reality for those who do the actual work on any kind of commission, as opposed to those paying for their work. He cited himself for telling a client at times just to back off when they become too critical, letting them know that they themselves wouldn't have done nearly as well as he still had, and also Dad, for bailing out from a job he was doing at one time for FX after he complained one too many times about his work.

I did agree with his point, but also brought up the fact that, put bluntly, learning how to draw was just never that high a priority for me. He agreed with that, saying that no one person can do everything, and that it's only practical to stick with what one does best. For me, he cited that I'm good at stuff like writing and organizing.

(This is exactly why I've already given up on other things like Japanese or coding. Even Jake took years after he and I first met to become interested to learn how to draw anyone. Dad once told me that commissioning people for artwork is stupid, but I know only too well that that's exactly how an economy works: People depend on one another for stuff that they themselves cannot do feasibly enough, so that they can devote their own time and resources towards stuff that they're better at.)

Before I had gotten started, I had asked both kymyit and agataylor if they'd be willing to critique what I draw. They both got back to me in the afternoon, and while agataylor said she will be busy for this week, kymyit offered a tutorial on how to go on about this. I accepted it, and now just need to wait to hear back again.

Speaking of which, here's another thing I'd like to bring up, about favorites.

It is true that, with anything, one is only bound to like some items or characters over others. To name a simple, non-art-related example, Kiratto Kaiketsu: 64 Tanteidan has a total of five different characters. My favorite of them is Tomo, and my least favorite is Jett, but I still leave it to my dice to decide which character I'll select with each of my controllers each time I play that game. But then again, that's something I usually play multiple times whenever I feel the whim to do so.

Back to artwork, when I commissioned agataylor for the Lucky Star sumo series, I initially picked ten out of one lot of seventeen, only one of which was one of the main four. (Kagami came about due to Simply Hiiragi commenting on the fic in a PM, Misao from a point donation, and the remaining five for the sake of completion when Agatha herself offered me the original copies of everything she had drawn to some point.) Even then, that one was mainly just a cover image for the fic; the other nine were the ones that interested me the most actively and still do.

There was a matter even when that was going on, of trying to budget myself. However, do keep in mind that most characters in the Lucky Star franchise to date have been introduced in either the main anime or the main manga, and usually both.

With Madoka, there are almost fifty Puellae Magi to date that have been introduced throughout the franchise, all from different installments. While none of the main four from Lucky Star interested me as much as the random nine others, the original five of Puella Magi Madoka Magica did. (While she does interest me as well, Nagisa came about mainly because I had already paid some points originally for either Pia or Michiru/Kazumi as a cover image for whichever of their respective fics would've come first, neither of which actually did.)

At some point, I had decided that it might be in order to commission first for what everyone would have looked like if they were designed for Madoka Magica (or at least designed the same way as by Ume Aoki). To set the standard (and also to avoid picking anyone randomly), I decided that the best thing to start with would be an illustration of Pia's story from Divine Gate, to feature Pia herself alongside the main five. (There are enough pics already of just the core five.)

But anyway, I guess it's time to come clean with myself: Here are all my other favorite Puellae Magi whose Cibus counterparts to think about:

Oriko Magica: Oriko, Kirika, and Yuma
Kazumi Magica: Ayase and Luca Souju (preferably together) and Remi Shiina
Suzune Magica: Tsubaki and Kagari
The Hollow Little Mermaid: Elise, Claire, Hiyori, and Komachi (preferably all together)
Others: Nagisa (The Rebellion Story), Jeanne (Tart Magica), and Pia (Divine Gate)

Total: 13

Not that many more than with the sumo series, I feel better now, and it also helps that I've got over $1,000 in my personal budget right now.

Noticed some palettes on the side of Masem Court late yesterday afternoon, in front of someone's house whom I've gotten to know recently. Went into her backyard (after knocking on her frontdoor and being told by one of her daughters where she was), and asked her if she was actually abandoning them. She told me that she had gotten them from Nick and Tiffany from the house preceding hers, and that she was planning to use them as kindling next year, but let me take them home with me since we'd have a more practical use for them (that being to stack firewood).
