Remembered where to make the first turn on my way to Robin Wood, but made a few wrong turns afterwards and had to call Marie to find my way around. Also decided to hit Brian's after eating breakfast, and it's a good thing I recognized Captain Nemo's (where me, Marie, and Sam bought some pizzas two days ago while moving stuff); that cued me to cross the street and turn around, but I still had to call Marie again to ask where to actually turn.

The apartment was locked, and Marie even told me it would be (I just went there on the off chance that Brian or one of his roommates would be awake to hear me knock), and I had to make my way all the way back to Marie's place, having to call her again after one more wrong turn.

(Let me tell you, walking all over town with a heavy backpack (containing my laptop, Pokemon ORAS guide, and Lucky Star manga) is fucking tiring, and my shoulders still ache from all that weight for such a prolonged amount of time.)

Shortly after I came back, Marie and Sam brought me to this bakery to hit a special bagel event that was going on (I would've been responsible for bringing one to Brian), but they were sold out by the time we got there. We then went over to Robin Wood, where we decided to buy a breakfast sandwich for Brian along with our own stuff, and John also stopped by and sat with us.

Soon enough, Brian also came by, along with Colleen and this guy named Devon who might just be involved in the Starbound project. They decided to get their own table, figuring that the one we were occupying would become jam-packed with the additional three of them. I hung outside with them while they awaited a table, and we talked about my plans for a game adaptation of Starbound.

Went over a bunch of stuff last night, including some additional stuff to what I was already planning to show him. Still got new stuff tabbed on his laptop (which I'm using right now to write this entry; he has already agreed to bring mine to Apple), but all that's really left to cover are the three consecutive entries from after I beat Freedom Planet.

One of the additional things I showed him was my first entry from October 23, where I highlighted the words "not only does this kind of stuff not come naturally to me". He told me that that's actually normal, and compared it to digging for gold, in that one will not find any when they get started and will have to keep trying before they eventually succeed. While Tristan's planned moment to shine would seem awkward in the fic (at least if not for either Jake's proposed explanation behind that or the fic overall becoming Denser and Wackier than it currently is), I would be sure to explain in advance that the fic is just a first draft to the game that Starbound is really going to be.

Brian also commented about what I said regarding what I referred to as "pockets". While I was mainly talking in that case about instances where realism takes a backseat, what I meant overall is where there's room to implement stuff beyond what we're shown. In the forum post I linked to (along with the thread itself) early on in this other fairly recent post, I had also mentioned Kagami's friendship with Misao and Ayano and why it works despite never being showcased until episode 15 of the anime.

(While I did mention not wanting to combine certain things with Lucky Star, I did realize before writing two follow-up entries three days later (first of two on that day), that that actually had more to do with aesthetics and whether it would fit somehow, such as being alien-related. While it actually might be interesting (if it doesn't end up being cringeworthy instead), I would at least avoid these comical motions that stuff tends to make in, say, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles (first example there 40 seconds into clip; don't miss the hyperlinks to said clip's follow-ups either, if you actually check that one out).)

Since this was brought up alongside Tristan's big moment, Brian also suggested that Hooters could be renamed something like "Ta-Tas", something done in general both for humor and to avoid trademark infringement. While Lucky Star is known for that as well (such as calling McDonald's just "Donald's" or changing World of Warcraft to "World of Warzone", or even "cutely" censoring the names of anime, characters, musicians, and even the word "pocky" in one case (late in the series) with sound effects), that is something that always bugged me and that I decidedly plan on doing away with. Though, ironically, I do plan on having Ivo (he'll come up again in a bit), whose voice will likely resemble Dr. Robotnik's from Sonic the Hedgehog SatAM (although he himself would resemble a teenage boy*), bid "Ta-taaahhh!" as his farewell during his first appearance, which would come rather shortly after that arc.

Later, before we both called it a night, Brian and I both decided to watch an episode of the anime (my idea, to which I had also hoped to invite an acquaintance of his). Since he told me when I asked that he still hasn't read Starbound beyond chapter 2, I decided to pick episode 5, the one where Kagami obtains her goldfish Gyopi (a.k.a. Goldie) at a summer festival.

While we were watching, Brian suggested that the goldfish-scooping game itself could be some kind of minigame. I specified that those are only held during festivals in Japan during the summer, and he suggested that maybe Starbound's story could go on for a whole year, since redesigning maps to fit the season is relatively easy if one knows how to make them in the first place. (It is true that Earthbound's Halloween hack starts you off in a version of Twoson recolored for autumn (three months after the events of EB itself), and Mother 3 also has three different versions of Tazmily Village (one on each side of a three-year time skip, and one more when the town is abandoned near the end of the game). However, this could be problematic, due to what I've already planned for the epilogue (i.e. Read more... )).

The machine also skipped a short span of time at two different points each, saying seconds in advance "Skipping over damaged part". This never happened when I was running any of my disks on either of my own machines, and it turned out there was no actual damage to the disk; I was able to just rewind to where it skipped, and the show played just fine from there. (Brian also told me that even if he were just listening to everything while multitasking with other things, he'd know when to rewind in order to get the most out of it.)

This is also one of the few times that I had planned on watching any segment of Lucky Channel, along with the credits and next-episode segments. I even made a point of mentioning that Akira's treatment of Minoru (which, ironically, only really kicks in for this episode when the show is "supposed" to end for that day) is exactly why Minoru will eventually turn her over to Ivo, as mentioned in the outline. I plan on killing her off mid-story, because I don't want any fan-sequels to involve her in any real way, given her obvious embodiment of Double Standard Abuse: Female on Male. (Good thing I never saw that on the TV Tropes page, or even said page itself, upon checking the series itself out.)

What's actually going to happen is this: Read more... )

In any case, like I mentioned offhand, Brian did tell me that he'd probably at least listen to the show in the background while doing other things on his computer. For that, he would obviously need to hear it in English, which means that I might as well take the OVA back home with me while leaving the main series with him to also share with anyone else he might see fit. If he's interested enough, we'll probably watch the OVA another day, when he's already familiar enough with the main series and everyone who appears during its course first.
