May. 2nd, 2016 06:49 amWent with Brian to Bagel Lovers yesterday morning, and chatted with him the ride there about certain things Misao says in that fic. He cleared things up that, given how much more reserved the Japanese in general are than Americans, he has a harder time imagining Japanese characters in general saying something like "Sweet mother of...!", which in turn is something he'd more easily imagine an adult male our age saying. (Then again, he's only seen three whole episodes and snippets here and there of the rest of the series.)
Also brought up Freedom Planet, stating its sense of humor balanced out with how serious it could also get, while mentioning that the game is currently incomplete, what with Spade still having yet to be added. He asked if there was a trailer of it anywhere, and I'd go on to pull it up when we got home.

Brian got a salt bagel to have at home, and I picked up just a strawberry Nesquik to have with lunch. First thing when we got home, I thought Brian would just take some time to eat what he meant as breakfast, but then he and everyone else (except Mom, who was sleeping) decided just to watch some YouTube videos on Roku.
I applied some Scotch tape to my thumb while they were watching one of several videos about kittens, and then they went on to watch the first compilation they'd watch (another one or two later on) of accidents involving heavy work vehicles, one showcasing some of the most dangerous railways to ride across the world, and several episodes of these webseries called History Buffs and The Great War.
Mom woke up while we were watching the first of those three, before making burgers for me, Marie, Dad, and herself. (I applied that tape to my thumb specifically to prevent any meat juice from leaking onto my band-aid or even beneath that cut I got, and unlike all the other ones I had to replace, all of this is still attached pretty firmly to this moment.) Grandma and Aunt Marie had some leftover corn chowder instead, and Brian declined on lunch altogether, obviously having just had breakfast an hour or so earlier.
Brian did read my entry for the day, which I had mentioned on the ride to the bagel place and promised to show him at home, but then his laptop ran out of power and he took a nap while charging it back up. Shortly thereafter, I went with Mom, Marie, Grandma, and Aunt Marie to the other Savers (near Costco) and Target. Got kinda thirsty on the way between stores, and Aunt Marie gave me a few bucks to buy something with (got water) so that I could be ready to chat some more with Brian right when we get home (assuming he'd be).

Marie and Aunt Marie picked up some Turkish takeout for our last dinner together right now, complete with two different kinds of baklava.
-----
While Brian didn't have much to say about what was little more than a summary of the previous day's discussion, I did show him that trailer and some footage of that gameplay video shortly before he and Marie left. He said that despite the humor he got to see before deciding enough (General Gong's speech pattern and a single (recurring) "quack" from a bird guard), and even gameplay notwithstanding, he would not equate that game at all with the Earthbound trilogy. In particular, he specified how much more relatable all the latters' characters are Lilac and Carol, who could get ready for action at a moment's notice. The mains in Earthbound are all just normal kids (even though Poo is somewhat less normal, being a psychic prince and all), Mother 3 has Lucas (coddled and takes some time to summon the courage to lead the Dragos against Fassad and the Pigmasks) and his father Flint (concerned mostly with finding his other, lost son, Claus), and one of the illustrations in the guide for Mother 1 has Ninten fleeing some zombies while screaming "JESUS!"
Also ended up showing Brian the final battle of Philosoma (the PSX game; not for Chelle; red overload). The buildup to that was actually a bit complicated. It started off with me bringing up how the concept of irony will be decidedly absent whenever Ivo is involved, including some graphic stuff he'll inflict upon Yutaka during the endgame (which he asked me to describe only when it's more relevant). He then asked if Ivo will be the main villain, and I explained to him that while he isn't behind the war itself, he wll be in control of Philosoma when it hatches from its planetary shell. I actually said "beneath the planet" or something to that effect, and he asked if I meant inside planet Earth or the world that the Original Ones previously replaced with the current one.
(Yes, I can understand his confusion there. While the organism in the original Philosoma was actually called Onella, the name Philosoma within Starbound will refer to both the planet from which the aliens hail and the eldritch abomination that had been forming deep within.)
Brian said that that background would be awesome for the first phase of Day of the Beehive's final battle (subsequent phases will take place in open space, after Philosoma hatches), and also made a connection between the fleshy environment, and the eye-like creature you fight, and the similar elements involved when you first fight Giygas at the end of Earthbound, citing the sense of terror that eye motifs tend to invoke in general. I would tend to agree, was already planning on something similar for that particular battle, and we could definitely look into applying something like that in Starbound's final battle.

Even though Brian and Marie have already left last night, Grandma and Aunt Marie are planning to spend one more day here once Dad picks them up from the hotel, before going to San Diego to meet with Aunt Tracy.
In the meantime, Brian had already told me last week that it would be more practical to go visit him next month when it's warmer in Boston, than to go with him and Marie in a car that they rented. Here's hoping that he reads all three remaining Starbound chapters and the side-story Birthday of Destiny by the time he and I meet again, so that I can then show him the outline for the rest of the story before he and I decide where to take it's immediate future.
