Dec. 29th, 2016 05:15 amAsked Brian to take me out for bagels yesterday so that I could discuss more thoughts I started having about the Cibus project.
To start with, I've finally realized that what I really wanted, rather than to present stuff in my own writing, was to spend time with everyone outside of the main five. I think the reason very little of what FanFiction has to offer is because, out of over 2,000 different fics (all content ratings but only in English), the most anyone else has is Oriko at 15, followed by Yuma at six. Be it on The Witch's Labyrinth (which has been dormant lately) or while discussing things w/ Chelle on Tumblr, I always enjoy the moments when I cite something from Oriko, Kazumi, Suzune, or Tart Magica (there is not much to cite about the Divine Gate crossover or The Hollow Little Mermaid). This would also explain my increased craving for Cibus discussion upon first reading Suzune Magica last year, and gives me all the more reason to talk about the Cibus project with Chelle whenever she's ready. (For the sake of more generalized discussion as well, having sent her most of my manga also helps, and I might very well get Brian his own set for Christmas next year.)
(Having arrived at such a conclusion, I think I very will might get Christina back in on things. If not to help flesh out the plot, then at least to re-write everything I write first for the sake of consistency with the first fic.)
Brian went on to give me ideas for a continuation from where things left off, citing how TV shows often resolve the previous season's conflict at the start of the next season, but then start a new conflict afterwards. The way the story ended leaves room for that.
He also described how common it is for the supposedly weakest of a given group to end up contributing the most in a given situation, as had happened in the anime. For example, in an episode of Looney Tunes, there are two teams each working on a skyscraper, and the foreman continually prevents this little guy from doing anything until his own team's building collapses, only for the runt to build it all up in about ten seconds.
Finally, he asked what Madoka's power was supposed to be, since that was never explored anywhere in canon besides the anime's endgame. Having already written how it was her wish that finally led research to take place regarding the magic system, I suggested that her power could have been to alter reality. Something like that would very well tie in with Oriko's wish to find her purpose in life, going even further to enable her and Kirika a chance encounter with the Pleiades Saints that they wouldn't have had otherwise.
(Having considered that, though, I suppose that would conflict with everything leading up to that, in which all the main five just die instead of being able to all team up. Mami's survival in turn would allow her to meet Nagisa, bringing hope to her after her mother died and left her all alone.)
With that, I now have ideas for a bunch of stories:

Throughout all the discussion we've had, Brian compared this whole situation to this story called Metamorphosis, in which the main character finds himself transformed into a cockroach and manifests as other lowly animals in representation of author Franz Kafka's internalized self-hate resulting from the stigma he faced as a Jew during World War II. He linked me to a webpage where it's hosted, but later gave me an actual book covering Kafka's works in general. Will be sure to find time to read that at some point.

Starting today, I should probably start studying Japanese again. Found out yesterday about a new Madoka game coming out next spring, called Magia Record, featuring at least one new Magical Girl, and decided to pre-register while there's still the chance to land Moemura (especially since Mom recently got me a smartphone in place of my last cell phone). No, I'm not gonna master the language in even less time than I've put into it in the past, but anything I can retain should still help.
Even though I still have Parasitic Trio on mind, Jake, having just moved back in with his family as they themselves relocated. Both his sisters are both married and pregnant, so he no longer has a bedroom to himself and is gonna have more limited access to a computer (not sure if buying a laptop would be an option for him either). Obviously, having to get off more than a few times each day is not going to help his muse, and in general, I hope he finds new employment soon in order to save up to move back out again.

Brian and Marie are both back in Boston. The three of us watched The Princess Bride, one of Mom's all-time favorite movies, on Netflix before Mom brought them to Port Jefferson.
