Brought that can of iced tea to work with me yesterday, and bought a container of macaroni salad to go with it for lunch when I first arrived. Took my 15-minute lunch break for the day just an hour before my shift was to end at 12:30, and was not surprised to see some stuff being served in the break room for the 4th of July. (Glad I didn't pre-order anything at Bagel Boss instead that morning, thanks to that iced tea I had saved from that charity event. I did get a notification about red-white-and-blue bagels, but those are really just plain bagels (don't like) with food coloring, like a rainbow bagel.)

Helped myself to a couple of hot dogs and some macaroni and potato salad each.

At one point during my shift, I had found a whole fistful of change in the Coinstar machine. Managed to pay $2 worth of that as half my bus fare before coming home.

Included were also these two copper tokens labeled "The Shoppes at East Wind". Turns out to be some shopping mall in Wading River, a whole 20-minute drive from here.

Brian and Emily had come to the house for the first time since Sunday, after Brian had been spending most of his time working in the city in order to tend to Dad's needs. They and Maris were all taking a nap, and I went upstairs to have one myself.

At some point, Brian invited me to come see some fireworks with him and Emily, and I took him up on that.

He first brought me to some party going on, where he had parted temporarily with Emily. We parked the car at her parents' house, but the actual party was at a neighbor's house. It was almost over, and we only spent a few minutes there to chat with them.

Me, Brian, and Emily went back to her parents' house, and I went upstairs to lay down on the parents' bed for a few minutes, before one of them (can't remember who) asked if I want to see a cat. I came right down, and saw what they said was a neighbor's cat who comes around, laying on a chair outside the backdoor. I let Emily take some pictures of me with it, starting with nuzzling my face on it while it was sleeping, then squeezing it against my face after having woken it up, then stroking it after it had a chance to eat, then letting it settle down on my lap, and finally, holding it upside-down.

Upon leaving the house, Brian drove us to this place called Don Taco. Emily stayed inside the car, but I came inside with him, and asked him to order me a cubano sandwich, from what was displayed on the one menu where you'd expect to see everything. As it turns out, there was some more stuff displayed or listed all the way on the other end; I managed to ask him to order me a tres leches cake, but noticed some things like shakes too late to bother swapping both that and a soda I had grabbed for, that were listed on the back wall but obscured behind some stuff. Even Brian just barely noticed horchata listed somewhere (not even there) in time to order a cup of that. (You'd think they'd have everything listed in one place?)

So anyway, we were given two bags, and Brian gave me one of them. Having never seen a cubano before (they are mentioned in Chef, but it's been so many years since I saw that), but also neglecting to think for myself, I opened up the first thing I saw, which was actually a cheese quesadilla Brian had ordered for Emily, and assumed that some paper wrapping was what they put my cake in, even though those were shown in plastic containers. Suffice to say, that's what turned out to be my cubano, and they flat-out forgot that cake. Brian ended up having the cubano as soon as we arrived at Bellport Bay, which he shared part of with Emily (apparently around the pork, which she doesn't eat).

We met up with Maggie and her family, and they all hung around on this playground on the sand. Maggie's two daughters mostly played on this merry-go-round with rope ladders, from what I could see, and I joined them for a spin at one point.

From the nearby pier, most of the fireworks we could see were on the mainland, shot from several different locations spanning Shirley and Mastic, but there was one spot that was much closer to us, from some nearby houses.

On our way home, Brian treated me and Emily to a McFlurry each.

Soon as we arrived on Long Island Avenue, we started seeing some much bigger fireworks right ahead of us. Mom was already out on the end of the driveway, watching some of our neighbors and their kids shoot them off from a house diagonal from ours, where the Scesnys used to live. (I often do hear fireworks going off this time of year, when I'm already fast asleep, and not just on the 4th, but I can't remember the last time any of us actually came out to see them.)
