Things have already gotten out of hand.
Jul. 21st, 2010 12:45 pmI'm not giving up Monster Collection Chronicles entirely, and I do appreciate everything Chelle has taught me about writing and Mon Colle Knights. To do that would disappoint her and Jake, and I've got stuff in place such as Mondo & Rockna's BIG Date and this entry about part 2, which would require that the events of that ficseries happen.
At this point, though, I don't know whether the ficseries will still be a sequel to the Mon Colle Knights anime or just a different version of it. The latter case is always true between anime and manga counterparts of any given series. As much as I'd like it to be a continuation (and some things in BIG Date assumes that it is), one thing Chelle told me would practically render the events impossible is that if there was any trouble from the likes of Warp or even Pfizgiy, all it would take for the Saint Star Dragon to appear would to get some people of all elements to gather and have six angels summon the dragon, and there is pretty much nothing it can't contend with.
-----
If it's an alternate version, some stuff will hold true about it. For example:
-the Knights will meet many of the same people as in the anime.
-they'd still be able to summon monsters if the need arises.
-Rockna would still have her sixth sense activated, and yes, it would become problematic for her as time goes on. (Not sure what purpose this served, other than eliminating the need for contracts w/ monsters and allowing her to speak with them.)
-The battle against Redda and Oroboros would still take place. Rockna would still be trapped inside the Dread Dragon, to be saved. (No such thing did happen in the manga, but I don't intend to deny the fact that it did happen in the anime.)
However, some other things that will be different from the anime:
-Twelve members, each with an elemental weapon and the powers contained w/i their given weapon.
-No cartoon physics.
-The Saint Star Dragon will not exist.
-Tanaka does not exist. Eccentro and co. just act on their own, if they even do appear at all.
-----
How to begin? Well, for one thing, I would still like Mondo and Rockna to live separately from the Knights that McKnight is in charge of. One important fact from the anime (which is why MCC would originally have been a sequel) was that Midori and Katsuo already went to live somewhere else before Ichirobei gained access into Mon World. That makes Katsuo a special case, so if the first fic is just its own arc instead of part 2 of the Mon World saga, that means that Midori and Katsuo would have to wait until mid-fic to enter.
(But then again, we have season 1 of Digimon, where Kari didn't join the party until mid-season. That is a possibility w/ Katsuo, but not confirmed yet.)
-----
Why do I even plan on writing this ficseries? Well, for one thing, I want something that would somewhat resemble an RPG, but with more realistic physics and interaction. For another thing, whenever I listen to a kick-ass video game song that I like, I don't have any solid material for it to go with, just a setting and random bits of action that I mentally make up as I go along. (Though, I never try to associate such music with anything other people write, so maybe the potential existence of the ficseries is why I like that kind of music, instead of the other way around. Could that be?) But possibly most importantly, I think it's that I'd like something solid to look back to as an accomplishment (as opposed to yet another game, where you play and have fun killing things, and then forget most of what happened).
-----
Oh, and on one more thing, training. Chelle did criticize Eragon for having a protagonist who masters a sword in a matter of months, even though there are lots of stuff where the main characters don't even need to train with their newfound weapons or skills at all.
I did tell Chelle that for the first fic, the Knights would still be poorly skilled with their weapons even when it comes time to fight Warp, but would become much better with them during the second and fourth fics (years after the first fic ends). However, for BIG Date to take place would essentially require that they have unlocked their special techniques during the first fic. To have the Knights initially suck at handling their weapons, still suck further into the fic, and then suddenly unlock some special power with them... wouldn't that seem a bit awkward?
Well, at the very least, they should each have learned a few spells each before realizing the powers. And to be fair, most of these powers would in turn require practice before they really become useful. For example, with Speed, you'd need to make judgments as to what to hop over or sidestep so you don't trip or crash. With Growth, you need to be careful not to step on anything or anyone, and not to fall down anywhere inconvenient. And Radar might initially give the user an overload of information, if there's too much stuff or too many people in the user's vicinity.

Date: 2019-07-14 06:47 pm (UTC)all it would take for the Saint Star Dragon to appear would to get some people of all elements to gather and have six angels summon the dragon, and there is pretty much nothing it can't contend with.
Actually, that's why I brought up the villains at least for the first fic would want to try and prevent enough monsters from gathering for this to occur.
(Not sure what purpose this served, other than eliminating the need for contracts w/ monsters and allowing her to speak with them.)
It was part of the prophecy, so it can be assumed that those in charge of setting it up also knew that there would be a point where she would have to mindrape the Terror Dragon.
Anyway, while I don't mind AU's (and like the idea of no Tanaka), but there is one problem with putting the Saint Star Dragon on a retroactive bus (http://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Main/PutOnABus). Without Saint Star Dragon, you'd also have to get rid of Oroboros' power, Mondo and Rokuna's symbolic names, Rokuna's sixth sense, the power to merge with monsters and the monster items. The whole thing was a domino effect to prevent the end of the world, and a lot of elements that contributed to that would be absent if there is no dragon to work towards. Mondo and Rokuna themselves are implied to be "creations" of the sixgate, it's in their names, in their symbolism (green haired Rokuna + third eye = green eyes on the saint star dragon, red-haired Mondo + mysterious bandage on forehead = red gem on forehead of dragon) and in their magic.
still suck further into the fic, and then suddenly unlock some special power with them... wouldn't that seem a bit awkward?
Nope, because weapon skill has nothing to do with whether or not you obtain a new tool/spell. You said unlock, right? This implies they obtain rather than train the ability.

Just because lots of writers do it doesn't mean it makes sense, and especially in the high fantasy genre that otherwise tries to be "plausible", it stands out when it just happens like that. Also, I'm not complaining about the magic Eragon also picks up, because drawing energy and saying a word isn't nearly as complicated as the year long practice it takes to get every muscle in your body accustomed to battle and printing every possible attack into your head and learning to know your own weaknesses.
By the way, since you brought up reason for wanting to write, do you actually like reading and writing?

Date: 2019-07-14 06:49 pm (UTC)Not gonna argue with you about eliminating the Saint Star Dragon, and it is a moot point anyway. However, I should note that the manga uses different characters in place of Zaha, Shiru, Redda, Oroboros, and the Saint Star Dragon. You might want to read and judge for yourself whether or not this defeats the purpose, if you intend to read it at all.
By the way, since you brought up reason for wanting to write, do you actually like reading and writing?
Well, I obviously do enjoy reading. As for writing, well, let me go over a few fics I've written myself:
SMW2: Yoshi's Island rewritten: Even though I only updated that fic once in a while when I was writing it, I did enjoy writing each chapter whenever I got around to it. I especially enjoyed the parts near the end of certain chapters where one of the main characters would play the bonus game. Stopped updating it years ago, though, because I wasn't getting enough reviews. (In any case, Jake had already proposed to write his own version of the fic, so there's no need to really come back to it.)
Fuyuki's Hot Night: Waited weeks to start writing this during the first few months that I started Dowling. When I finally did get started with it, I had a slightly hard time deciding how to start, and almost gave up, but then I reminded myself that I already promised that fic to Jake. After that, the going got easier with it, and I enjoyed re-reading my own work a handful of times.
Mondo & Rokuna's BIG Date: Enjoyed writing what I could for that fic, even though I wasn't able to write all of it myself. I think of the finished product as a pretty satisfying payoff, and I do re-read the whole thing every now and then. Especially glad to have it listed in the fanfiction list on DeviantArt.
So in all, yeah, I enjoy writing things to some degree, even though the only fic I wrote beyond four chapters was the Yoshi's Island fic.

Date: 2019-07-14 06:49 pm (UTC)What characters it uses wouldn't necessarily matter if the motif and goal remains the same, but indeed, I can't really comment on this since I have not read the manga. In fact, I have no way of doing so, since to my knowledge it isn't online anywhere and it's unlikely I'll be able to buy it.
Stopped updating it years ago, though, because I wasn't getting enough reviews.
This is why I asked it. Do you like writing enough to finish six novels of 30-80 chapters if you don't get enough feedback? I've seen several fics abandoned for this same reason.

Date: 2019-07-14 06:49 pm (UTC)Same was pretty much the case with The Furrysitters' Club, along with the fact that the Sonic fandom doesn't interest me that much anymore.
Monster Collection Chronicles is not gonna be yet another fetish outlet fic (or a request, which Fuyuki's Hot Night was). It's gonna be real, plot(-and-combat)-oriented stuff, so you probably shouldn't worry about me abandoning it altogether.
