These past few days, I've been reminiscing on my first experiences with Earthbound, back in the last few months I had been in 4th grade. Been thinking of downloading a new ROM copy to my laptop, and then giving Mother 3 a try after I beat that.

Also been thinking of creating something similar as fanfiction, but truth be told, I've actually forgotten exactly what I want out of it. However, I do remember wanting the same thing a year and a half ago, when I first tried out Earthbound Zero before playing halfway through Earthbound on our main PC.

Both that time and recently, I thought of making it the same story which involved whichever characters involved being gigantic at least half the time. That was originally going to be its own universe, but then I decided that I would like any of that story's readers to think of them definitively anime-style, not cartoon-like or realistic. So, I toyed around with both Lucky Star and Pani Poni Dash! as possible candidates. The former won, at least for a possible EB knockoff. (Monster Collection Chronicles cannot be the same story, given how much more complex monsters are in Rokumon-verse than enemies are in Earthbound, and since I want characters in the fic in question to have access to weapons closer to home, as opposed to swords and staves and such.)

With Lucky Star, I already obsess over certain characters' hair done into beehives. And while I'd prefer not to see any "hived" girls grow as gigantic, the possibility of the girls' hair being updone does carry its own way to implement such a story. Namely, that each of the girls' hives would contain a crystal that enables them to use some equivalent to PSI. The four main characters (including Tsukasa, who naturally isn't hived) would begin some kind of adventure afterwards, and their friends would also join at certain points. However, of those six, only Hiyori and Ayano are eligible for a hive (Kuroi-sensei is too, but she's not technically one of their friends... well, she is, but not one of their peers, and we're not counting minor characters such as Miki, Kanata, or anyone not in the anime), but it's possible that they'll get their own hair updone after the adventure ends and the mains' hair returns to normal. (Haven't decided on that yet.)

But anyway, back to the main topic: What exactly do I want out of writing anything similar to Earthbound?

Well, I did like the graphics, as well as the enemies' clay figures that appeared in the player's guide, but that's out of the question with fanfiction. For that, some kind of ROM hack would probably be a better bet, but such would be beyond my own capabilities. Not to mention that all three games in the trilogy had different graphics from each other anyway. (I wonder what I would've thought of Earthbound Zero if I were ever to play that back in 1996.) And there's also the fact that with a game, you trade off the fluidity of battles that take place in fanfiction.

Am I looking for something with both comical and serious enemies? Obviously, Monster Collection Chronicles cannot fulfill that. However, this has been fulfilled by Makeruna! Makendou Z, and I've also seen ROMhacking.net's newspost for the translation of The Adventure of Hourai High School, which is also supposed to have similarly quirky humor. Guess I'll have to give that game a try at some point.

Could it be the idea of exploration? One way or another, a Lucky Star fic would not be able to completely implement the same kind of world that Earthbound is in. Whereas Lucky Star takes place in Japan, Earthbound has its own version of, well, Earth, entirely, which is why it can have locations similar to Arizona, Egypt, South America, and even a prehistoric-like world. MMZ has its own party traveling mostly in an alternate world, with the school being the only place in their own world explored, but then again, in EB, Ness does learn to teleport, which enables him to return home at will anyway. And no, I do not want the same kind of exploration as from Persona 4, where the party only really explores a psychedelic world (as opposed to a substantial one like in MMZ or Mon Colle Knights) whenever they're not in their hometown.

Well, I still can't seem to place a finger on what I wanted in the first place, but the idea of the Lucky Star girls going on some adventure w/ their hair updone does interest me anyway.
