Jun. 28th, 2012 06:28 amUnable to focus on Parasitic Trio yesterday. Looked around at a few fanfics for Malcolm In the Middle, to see whether he actually goes through his family's plans for his life or betrays them. In one, he kills himself for supposedly letting them down, in another he kills himself and leaves a note ending with "See you all in hell!", and another still states in the summary that him accomplishing the goals set for him and earning their respect is a foregone conclusion, just to name a few. The very first one, though, is an anvil aimed at Lois to take a look at her life and her character, and ask herself if that's what she wants people to think of her as.
Having read that one, I decided to write a one-shot of my own to be situated right above that one, asking Malcolm if he actually thinks it's worth it to make all kinds of sacrifices for a family that not only did nothing but mistreat him but also doesn't use any money they themselves make responsibly enough not to need his funding.

Got two reviews during the hours after having posted it, one of them being from Mai Ascot, author of the aforementioned Lois-fic. However, at this point, I've actually come to realize that maybe Lois and Hal actually do have a point, and that Malcolm actually should try to fulfill the destiny laid out before him, if only for his own self-esteem. Not many people can even come close to earning a Master's degree, let alone becoming the president, and it would be a waste for him to throw away such high potential as he has. I understand that Lois even told him while they were discussing things, to look her in the eye and tell her that he wouldn't be able to, and he couldn't.
Either way, it should go without saying that maintaining relationships with such toxic people as Lois is no form of self-respect whatsoever, nor is spoon-feeding people who abuse money. At some point, maybe Malcolm himself should try to teach his family a lesson about financial responsibility by refusing to fund them any further and letting them suffer the consequences, just like they want him to suffer from hardships. Furthermore, the tropes page for Hilariously Abusive Childhood states that said trope is averted with Francis, and while the other boys perceived it as normal for most of the show's run (emphasis on that fact too), he recognized abuse for what it is after having lived away from his family for so long. Leaves some room to believe that Malcolm will eventually wise up about that, though we don't know how long Francis was planning to sever ties with Lois before he did, be it an instant decision, during his time at military school, or even before he was sent there.
