Jun. 22nd, 2014 06:52 amWent to the post office and the library with Mom yesterday. Noticed a rather funny birthday card that Grandpa Bob would surely like next year, during our time at the post office. Mom had some shopping to do at King Kullen while I returned Magical Meow Meow Taruto and several books of hers and looked around for other anime. Found Save Me! Lollipop.

Had a particularly bad experience with Jake last night.
To begin with, Jake has already expressed not too long ago, being fed up with talking about Earthbound's spot on the sliding scale between silliness and seriousness. Just last night, I asked him about how much depth he perceives in the game's plot, compared to what Chelle perceived as just stuff happening for no real reason due to its zany, surreal nature. He gave me an earful that included "Just do whatever you want."
Now, it does suck whenever I get on anyone's nerves. In such instances, I tend to blame myself for having said the wrong thing during a given exchange, but I don't normally fall into depression over it. Not gonna talk right now about why *this* is more profound, because I don't want to set him off any further than I already have. Might do so later, when he's in a better mood (or unless he asks).
(To be fair, he *did* say that he was having some kind of cold since 4 A.M. and thus wasn't feeling very rested.)
Read the newly uploaded fifth chapter of Cries Unheard, hoping to get my mind off of what happened. In practice, the events of that fic so far only mixed in with what already was on my mind, and made it harder to sleep. I mean, we already know from the start that the boys that the mains befriend do horrible things to them and eventually pay with their lives; the real question is, will the girls be able to avoid life in prison for having killed them? Even if they do, things are still going to be much darker for them than before they had met said boys. And since one of said boys' fathers is a yakuza boss, it seems likely that he will come after Miyuki's parents (who had gotten acquainted with him) and kill them before they can post her bail.
From there, I did remove Fanfiction.net's Lucky Star archive from my bookmarks so that I wouldn't continually check for updates until after the fic is complete. This is yet one more of those stories that I don't like the direction it's headed; in this case, particularly like StarCrossed, because one of the main reasons is that it's all four of the franchise's main characters and no one else who are being directly abused, even if others are being abused on the sidelines.
Watched an episode of Avatar: The Last Airbender, which *did* work briefly, but then asked Chelle if she uses AIM, since she did used to use MSN. To get my exchange with Jake off my mind was part of the reason I asked, but in general, I feel like a leech to constantly ask her for suggestions on various things without sharing stuff in general with her (save through this blog). I mean, I do read her blogs on this site and Tumblr, and I do share stuff with her that she might like every now and then, but she once did say that she's tired of being little more than people's advisor and would appreciate emotional support about her own issues. She, however, did mention on Live.com that, unlike Jake, she isn't one to bring stuff up herself very often, so I guess that makes us even at least in that aspect.
I should mention, though, that item #6 in this cracked.com article states that the key to success is to find the right people with the right experience and not pissing them off. (Incidentally, #10 on the list is something that the mains really could have used before meeting the antagonists in the aforementioned Cries Unheard.)

But I never said things happen for no real reason.Obviously, the scenarios create a tone and I assume character development happens along the way. I said things happen for a simple plot reason; a convo we had because of that whole confusion we had over your complex plot request.
I'm not really sure what to say about the adviser thing. It doesn't seem to be anything I can get out of anyway, and it's something I'd still do if I wasn't so screwed up. I don't mind giving tips on stuff in itself.

Date: 2019-07-17 11:59 am (UTC)I assumed that's what you meant to infer based on the following line from our exchange:
a lot of the subplots described there are random sidequest stuff that fits in with Earthbound's zany surreal tone. What I'm gathering here is that you don't want subplots related to the main plot, but just random things.
Consistent with both points, are that a lot of the things that Ness and co. deal with are directly related to Giygas. The Happy Happyist cult, the zombie plague in Threed, Monotoli's involvement with the Mani Mani statue, and the attacks on Winters and Onett... Giygas is behind those. Ditto for the various enemies you fight in most places, where Giygas either has people and animals under mind control or has robots scouting the area in question.
That said, true, I must have misconstrued "random stuff" with "stuff without a real purpose".
Also, you did mention that the kind of plot I described only works because of Earthbound's nature, one that we have pretty much concluded more than once is not something I'm cut out for.
I should mention, though, that Mother 3, is much more to the point with things, with all three of its pre-time-skip chapters designed to set the stage for Lucas's adventure through a warped version of his homeland. I will admit that the kind of list you created before, actually does bear some kind of resemblance to its plot structure, especially when the Seven Needles become relevant. The game still is much more fleshed out, but that's understandable enough, since it is up to me to come up with all the actual details of things.

Speaking of random stuff, here's something I need to bring up, due to what Jake had said just several days ago:
No, I do not plan on reviving the Hunt Club. However, I did ask Jake for his opinion about the idea in general (after deciding to put it to sleep, actually). More specifically, I asked him why Ness and co. take some time off during their time in Fourside to help the Runaway Five fulfill another bogus contract since the one they were stuck in back in Twoson, even though the Mani Mani statue (which they learned of its whereabouts previously from Master Belch) is obviously a bigger fish that needs frying. He chalked that up to some downtime they decided to have, and thought they might help some friends out that they made previously while on break, before asking me why I asked. I told him about how similarly small-fry you said the Hunt Club would have been compared to what's going on worldwide. His reply was that it sometimes is okay to ignore logic for the sake of something personal, especially if the party is having some downtime, back at home where their friends are still tormented; better then and there than to not help out while on a break. (Even Brian agreed when I showed him the convo in question, that that would have been a legitimate storyline.)
My real point, though, is that he did say that he doesn't care about Earthbound's plot at this point. Therefore, if I were to bring that issue up with him following his rant instead of a few months ago, I'm not sure if he would have been so willing to discuss the issue, instead of telling me just to do whatever. In other words, I'm not sure if he's gonna be so helpful with the plot from now on as he was previously, although Mom did say that he probably just needs some time to cool off. (It is a known fact, that too much of a given thing becomes tiresome. In fact, I do recall a similar situation between me and him five years ago, from which we did reconcile.)

Got that.

Date: 2019-07-17 12:00 pm (UTC)I know that they are related. I did not deny that. It is not the point whether it relates to the bad guy or not. It's still a really simple plot. They swarm stuff and the protagonists defeat them, earn chance to move on while getting xp. There don't even seem to be alternate routes based on choices. You sent me a whole plot description where you were able to describe what happens without alluding to the motivations of the villains one single time, yet I was able to understand what happens despite the fact that I have no idea what Giygas plan is based on the actions alone. World domination or destruction? Doesn't seem to matter. Ditto for the trampolines he encounters.
I asked him why Ness and co. take some time off during their time in Fourside to help the Runaway Five fulfill another bogus contract since the one they were stuck in back in Twoson, even though the Mani Mani statue (which they learned of its whereabouts previously from Master Belch) is obviously a bigger fish that needs frying.
Since this is a quest game, the first thing that needs answer is : do they can xp or passage from it? They provide the characters passage later on, right? Likely that was put there to make it less random that they're there when needed.
Before deciding anything in universe, see whether it makes sense from a narrative level. In universe it would make sense that Earthbound characters would choose to help if they encounter that. But out of the universe, it's still the authors choosing to put that in there, and they do it for a different reason the characters inside. For Earthbound, it was the opportunity for more oddness mingled with moving the quest to the next stage.
