Feb. 10th, 2015 07:16 amWent with Mom to the library to pick up a Dewey Decimal book that was supposedly on hold for me, along with DVD volumes 4-6 of Princess Tutu. Somehow, the clerks were unable to find the former, but agreed to give me a call when they do find it.
We then stopped at a gas station, and since Mom only had $5 left on her gift card, she asked me to ask the store clerk if I could buy a PowerBall ticket with it. I asked him if I could spend it on anything other than gas, and he confirmed. I then went out to ask Mom if she wanted PowerBall in particular or if anything would do, and she requested PowerBall. Ordered two tickets, one with a PowerPlay, and the clerk told me that lotto is the only thing off limits with gift cards. Seeing how little gas $5 could possibly buy, I decided instead to buy two boxes of cake balls ($2.25 each) and a roll of Haribo Roulette (for the remaining 50ยข).
As we then drove to the gym, Mom asked me why I spent it on sweets, and at first suggested that that could be my allowance for the week after I explained. She also asked me if I meant it as a Valentine's Day gift, and while I did intend to share it with her to begin with, I thought that might be a good idea. She declined, though, due to being on Weight Watchers, and then said that she'll let letting me buy that stuff that be her gift to me instead.
I then asked her if she ever checks the jackpot payout for Mega Millions, or if she only pays attention to PowerBall. As she explained on the way to the gym and even as we left, she actually doesn't pay attention to anything. Rather, the whole idea was that of a coworker of hers, with whom she and three others fill some numbers out on a playcard and chip $2 in each whenever the jackpot is high enough.

The way I play is much more intricate. My hopes of winning big in order to fund Day of the Beehive or even just to not have to find work is exactly why I have Mom give me $5 each week, and I make a point not to spend more than that amount (unless I hit something that costs more than that).
Before I start explaining, here is the New York Lottery website, so as to make it easier to understand what I'm talking about:
http://nylottery.ny.gov/
First thing I do after each game, is roll an 8-sided die to determine the next game I play. The outcome of each number is as follows:
1) Whichever twice-a-week game is drawn the day that I go somewhere that does lotto. On Mondays and Thursdays, that would be Cash4Life, Tuesdays and Fridays are for Mega Millions w/ Megaplier applied, Wednesdays and Saturdays are for PowerBall (w/ PowerPlay applied) or New York Lotto, and I don't buy anything on a Sunday.
(This also applies, minus the Megaplier/PowerPlay, if I go somewhere that does lotto but not the game I'm set on.)
2) Take 5
3) Numbers. Landing 1 through 5 on a cubic die determines how I play, while landing a 6 warrants a Lucky Sum. With box, straight/box, or combination plays, I flip a coin to determine whether to play a 3-way or 6-way play.
4) Win 4. A cubic die roll determines how I play, with 6 warranting a Lucky Sum and a re-roll. With box, straight/box, or combination plays, an 8-sided die will determine whether I play a 4- 6- 12- or 24-way play.
5) Quick Draw. My watch's right second digit will determine how many spots I play.
6) Pick 10
7) Scratch card. Start with $1 brands, and roll a number up to 1 plus number of active games. The highest number brings me to the next category up, while anything lower determines which brand I order if it's across a counter. If it's at a vending machine, though, then then brand I order will be determined by the number I rolled to the number of active games or a glance at the second-digits on my watch.
For example, there are currently five games listed under $1. That warranted a roll for 6 when I rolled an 8-sided 7 on the 31st. If I landed a 6, that would have brought me to the $2-3 games. Landed a 1, which warranted Action Jackson (first one currently listed). When Mom and I went for a haircut three, we stopped at a gas station which didn't have that, and since it was Sunday, I simply left. Two days later, I went with her to BJ's, and went to the machine during the checkout. It offered three $1 games inside, along with Win 4, Mega Millions, and PowerBall. Since I rolled a 1 out of 5, I went with the first of those three, Loose Change. If I had rolled a 4 or 5, I would've selected Mega Millions, and if there were more than five $1 scratch games, I would've glanced at my watch to decide.
8) Nothing for rest of the week.
-----
And finally, let me also mention that I do not pay for anything in debit, only in cash (or in gift cards with a minuscule amount left on them). Late last August, I rolled an 8, and went to the bank to deposit everything I had. Mom gave me a container full of change amounting to $85, and we agreed that that could count as allowance until New Year's, meaning I spend nothing on lotto until then.
I also refrain from playing outside of New York State, so as to not win and then possibly have to return home before cashing in.
And, I also make a point of leaving my wallet home when we go to the gym, so that I don't make a habit of hopping over to Stop 'n' Shop for a ticket, since we go there almost every day (and also so that sitting down is more comfortable when I'm working out).
(For that reason, yesterday was a special case. I had a bag full of cans and bottles to deposit at King Kullen, and was already set on playing Pick 10 ($1). Made $2.20 off of them, and in order to carry around less change, I instead bought Cash4Life ($2). If that were to happen today, I'd play a Mega Millions w/ Megaplier; tomorrow, though, would be a regular PowerBall. Stuck the ticket inside one of my DVD cases, so as to not risk it going through the wash should I forget about it, but only the CashBall number (4) matched that of today's drawing.)
(In any case, that's $3 left for this week, and the next planned game is Instant Take 5 (a $1 scratch game); 2/5 if I stop at a machine.)
We then stopped at a gas station, and since Mom only had $5 left on her gift card, she asked me to ask the store clerk if I could buy a PowerBall ticket with it.
