Decided once and for all to start reading the Lucky Powers series, just for some initial exposure to see how far I'd be willing to take things with Starbound. So far, it hasn't really fazed me at all, although I did stop reading Miyuki's fic halfway through due to the power of her (destructive) sneezes being inversely proportional to how loud they are. Still reading the second of four, Misao's.

Only a guess, but I think it's that the presentation in text only allows you to picture things happening as you feel comfortable with. Maybe it's not cartoon physics itself, so much as when something behaves overly comical in some way or another (kinda like the Magic School Bus or Inspector Gadget). I mean, see how Konata transforms the Hiiragi household altar into some kind of "carriage" in Kagami's dream in the OVA, compared to how Mumbo transforms you in Banjo-Kazooie. Honestly, I think that might be part of the reason why I was able to choose Lucky Star in the first place for something inspired from (other aspects of) Earthbound.

In any case, the sources of everyone's powers in the ficseries are pockets, not regular parts of the world. Miyuki's power-sneezes comes from some legendary flower, Misao's anything-bag is something rare she just stumbles across, Kagami's powers as a Magical Girl comes from an elixir that Konata whips up, and Yutaka and Minami's respective powers come from the former's wish upon a star that splits it in two. While they're driven by the rule of funny and obviously wouldn't work in the anime or manga proper, the franchise itself could have spawned something like it just as easily as Pocket Travelers (where the main four inexplicably shrink to just a few inches while their surroundings remain normal) and the OVA's haunted pet store (only one particular spot out in town), if anyone behind it saw fit to.
