Shortly after Marie came over, she asked me if I could think of any jokes to tell. Not something I usually do, and I couldn't think of anything offhand, but then Dad told one where two guys walk out of a bar, encounter a mugger who demands whatever they got, and one of them gives the other some that he's owed him from earlier on. I then told him of a similar joke I remember from Mad magazine (XL volume 23 (Aug. '03): Great Moments in Bad Timing), in which two guys are walking down the street, and one pays the other a twenty he's owed since 1972, just short of a mugger lurking in an alleyway.

(The issue itself is obviously a compilation of stuff used in earlier issues, such as The 60s and the 90s (from volume 356 (April '97), first one I ever read when I discovered it day before Halloween that year), Cheap Foreign Ripoffs of American Cartoons (which I remember seeing early in '98), When Non-Sports Shows Use The "Fox Box" Concept (which Brian showed Cousin Dennis later that year), Job Application Form for the Next Spice Girl (that girl group already went out three years earlier), and satires of Terminator 2: Judgement Day (Jan. '92), Face/Off (Nov. '97), Con Air (Aug. '97), and The Rock (Nov. '96). To say nothing about most features being black and white, whereas the regular series had already switched to color, this was probably recycled as well.)

Later on, I overheard Mom, Dad, and Marie talking about one of Dad's hospital visits and mentioning something about him having cracked a rib or two and how his doctors (who treat a type of cancer I shouldn't specify) can't treat broken ribs. I burst in and said that the doctors can't treat "crabs". Cracked ribs, Dad's known to get "crabby" at times because of his health, and Cancer is the crab of the Greek zodiac (and incidentally Marie's sign, as Mom mentioned afterwards).

-----

For Thanksgiving dinner this year, Mom made some roast beef, Brussels sprouts, roasted potatoes, and Yorkshire puddings. I was too full for dessert (chocolate pecan pie) afterwards, and instead had half a glass of eggnog before going to bed, and it's a good thing me and the other kids had already had a slice of sweet potato pie as an afternoon snack.
