When we started watching Kanon more than a week ago, Mom commented on how similar Nayuki looks to Homura Akemi, since she can only be seen from behind at first, and asked if the show had anything to do with Madoka. (While I'm mentioning this, she also couldn't quite make out Yuichi's name at first, and asked if "Luigi" was what it was.)

Four episodes later is when Mai Kawasumi, after first being shown standing in the school with a sword at night, tells Yuichi upon question that she is hunting demons. Mom asked then if she is a magical girl, and it doesn't help that Madoka did end with its combat-oriented magical girls fighting what were dubbed Demons in English, but I told her then that not only is she not, but the ones in that other show, known also as Puellae Magi, are just one of many types going back decades.

(For that matter, the demons here are also completely different beings from those in Madoka, and it is quite a coincidence that another sword-weilding girl named Mai, Tsurugino, is another type of magical girl, known as a Makendou and recruited by someone for supernatural investigations.)
