Oct. 4th, 2022 06:37 amTurns out my work on the CCscript had backfired.
After some complications with Disgaea, Muhammad offered to show me any change I want for $62 ($50 plus tax) out of our agreed-upon budget, something I am going to hold him to. I asked instead that he put Disgaea aside and start working on Earthbound instead while I get ready to start stacking this year's firewood (at least when it stops raining), since I would like not to have to think about that if I get any finished ROMhacks soon.
I recompiled the game, loaded a level-10 file in Twoson, headed for Onett to talk to Frank to verify a text change I made to him, and one of the first enemies I meet on my way there somehow possesses me, with the battle text shifted far to the left and truncated from the message bar's edge.
I went on to redownload the hack from my old exchanges with Orbay, and sure enough, things work properly again.
Later, I renamed the bugged version, and with my save data gone, I started a new game, and encounter multiple glitches starting when I reach the door out of Ness' bedroom, until hearing the wrong track play when I step outside his house.
Beyond simple text edits, the only actual changes I recall making to date were to the aftermaths of both fights against Master Belch. It stands to reason that it only takes one wrong edit to mess an entire game up. Kashif and Bilawal had both charged me extra to bring Mother 3 and Star Ocean respectively to a safe state to make changes to, and this looks like the kind of thing they were likely talking about. Perhaps paying a professional to make more changes might've been the better idea after all, especially if I am to focus back on Starbound anytime soon.
After having given Muhammad both the functional hack and the raw game yesterday, I have just given him the bugged version this morning to compare in Visual Studio.
(I should also mention having brought up certain issues about money with Marie when she was here last week. I went on to formulate some policies to adopt, and now, I am going to expect nothing less than actual changes before I continue funding him for any reason at all. I have asked that the amount I've just given him cover any work to be done prior to the one change I've specified so far, after he agreed to cover any refinement following the change itself. He did not argue with that, and I will quote what I said if he tries to milk me any further.)
