Dad's friend Doug Noyes from across the WoodenBoat forum has been extremely ill, and so I had to come with him to Connecticut yesterday to help him manage firewood.

On the way there, Dad asked me if I remember that time when he took me and Brian up to Maine when we were little, and then that time when we went to some park and got a dinosaur footprint for each of us kids in 1995 (coming home from Connecticut the only other time we've been there).

Nostalgic stuff, now that he mentions it. )

Anyway, before we got to Doug's house, we stopped at a small restaurant to eat lunch. I ordered a BLT, and Dad ordered some kind of burger. There was also a grocery store in the same shopping center, where we would have bought some snacks for later, but it turned out to be closed, and Dad had to drive around for about ten minutes to find an open one. I bought some donuts and a couple of milkshakes, and then we headed for the house.

So, we got there, and were greeted by a large dog with heavy black fur (most likely a Newfoundland, when I looked up dog breeds last night). We saw someone splitting logs, and when we greeted him, he introduced himself as Ed, and his dog as Tucker. Doug was driving a tractor with a wagon attached, and Dad told both of them that we would have brought our woodsplitting tools with us if we had been told that there would be chopping involved, instead of just moving it around, and thus went to a nearby hardware store to buy an extra ax.

Spent a while, first loading the wagon and stacking the split wood on the porch, and then more time splitting logs. Dad tells Doug that he looks "yellow", but he doesn't seem to buy it. He certainly does look old, even though Dad says that he's actually younger than him.

After a while, Dad went inside the house to chat with Doug. I decided to have a break as well, but remained outside at first to walk around. I did come inside at some point, and sat down on a wooden chair as they chatted. Dad mentioned once having had to drive fifteen miles to find a video store when we visited Grandpa Bob in Florida (August in 1995, some months after Connecticut). One of Doug's cats Tarzan (gray, and he also has a black one named Hercules) also came around. I picked him up, but his fur was quite raggedy. Doug told me that he's had him for fourteen years (even though our old cat Sabrina still felt soft even during the last weeks of her life), and that she isn't much of a lap cat (though more of one than Mabel is, as Dad pointed out; she growls and bites when she's picked up).

Decided to have two of those donuts and one of my milkshakes before continuing with the wood.

Dad says I've done a tremendous job splitting all that wood. We decided that we would get a pizza at La Marguerita for dinner. At some point, I told him that I might actually not be hungry, given how exhausted I was from all that work, and Dad had me call Mom and tell her that we were gonna postpone it for tonight. However, later on, I was already feeling more awake, I decided that I was up for it, and so he had me call Mom again to order it.

I had gotten eight emails while we were away from home, not counting an exchange with Veritas Language Solutions. I decided that I would show everything to Mom today.

As far as Veritas goes, I don't think I'm gonna be able to do business with them until I have a job. I gave Valerio Chervino links to the epilogue and the first main cutscene, and was given a file specifying the prices to be 160 and 60 respectively, both in GBP. That would translate into $258.77 and $97.04 respectively. A whole hundred dollars for barely more than a minute worth of dialogue. Gonna have to play this by ear when I finally get a job somewhere, but here's a link so that I remember, in case I can't find better deals elsewhere:

Gonna call translationcentral.com today to see if they're any more worthwhile.
