Went with Mom to the library to pick up a Dewey Decimal book that was supposedly on hold for me, along with DVD volumes 4-6 of Princess Tutu. Somehow, the clerks were unable to find the former, but agreed to give me a call when they do find it.

We then stopped at a gas station, and since Mom only had $5 left on her gift card, she asked me to ask the store clerk if I could buy a PowerBall ticket with it. I asked him if I could spend it on anything other than gas, and he confirmed. I then went out to ask Mom if she wanted PowerBall in particular or if anything would do, and she requested PowerBall. Ordered two tickets, one with a PowerPlay, and the clerk told me that lotto is the only thing off limits with gift cards. Seeing how little gas $5 could possibly buy, I decided instead to buy two boxes of cake balls ($2.25 each) and a roll of Haribo Roulette (for the remaining 50ยข).

As we then drove to the gym, Mom asked me why I spent it on sweets, and at first suggested that that could be my allowance for the week after I explained. She also asked me if I meant it as a Valentine's Day gift, and while I did intend to share it with her to begin with, I thought that might be a good idea. She declined, though, due to being on Weight Watchers, and then said that she'll let letting me buy that stuff that be her gift to me instead.

I then asked her if she ever checks the jackpot payout for Mega Millions, or if she only pays attention to PowerBall. As she explained on the way to the gym and even as we left, she actually doesn't pay attention to anything. Rather, the whole idea was that of a coworker of hers, with whom she and three others fill some numbers out on a playcard and chip $2 in each whenever the jackpot is high enough.

The way I play is much more intricate. My hopes of winning big in order to fund Day of the Beehive or even just to not have to find work is exactly why I have Mom give me $5 each week, and I make a point not to spend more than that amount (unless I hit something that costs more than that).

Before I start explaining, here is the New York Lottery website, so as to make it easier to understand what I'm talking about:
