VanillaMetal has abandoned The Original Story as of yesterday.

After what seems like several months now, I had finally gotten around to showing Chelle the two chapters that she had written up. She came back to me with a critique for the first, I showed it to Vanilla, and she in turn took offense at various comments of hers and deemed the whole thing rather poorly done. I talked her into continuing while also bringing it up with Chelle, who told me that only two people (of that many) had taken offense to her critiques, and in both cases, she was able to talk things over.

That, unfortunately, had not been the case here. Vanilla asked me not to request any further critiques at all, and then I brought up the issue of payment now that my initial points payment has covered for the two chapters she's written so far.

Here's the real reason for Makoto's pic today: She asked to be paid only through PayPal, even though I already mentioned under the pic through which she found me that I will not be using that for reasons related to Autism Speaks.

We both ended up agreeing to call the whole thing off. Her writing was good, but to put things bluntly, that was just really unethical of her to disregard something she could not have possibly missed. I'm honestly considering blocking her for that, and to begin with, the five girls were supposed to be introduced one at a time throughout the first arc. It sure helps that that story is one of my lower priorities in fiction, and I hope someone else comes along and offers to start it over.

About payments in general, I understand only too well why PayPal is more convenient than other methods. I will admit that Western Union hasn't really worked out that well even for me. Granted, I have come across other people's considerations to boycott it for other reasons (such as about actual payment issues). However, while many people just can't be bothered to create accounts elsewhere just for one person or discuss other methods (chances are better with people I know well enough), I am not going to resign myself and keep using it. I still intend to empty out and close my account, when we come home from a planned trip to Virginia more than a month from now. While I can conceivably cut back on art commissions and seek out the right people, this is gonna become problematic when Brian and I start working on Day of the Beehive. There doesn't seem to be any option on Kickstarter to block off PayPal payments, and hiring people to work on stuff will also be harder.

As much sense as it makes, I brought it up with Mom when she came home, and asked her why PayPal, while being more convenient than older methods of payment, barely have any competition with similar services like ProPay (ditto for Google vs Bing, Yahoo, etc.). She told me that it's just better than everything else, and its unfortunate that a company with such a monopoly over its industry as it has just so happens to support such an unethical entity as Autism Speaks.

Moments after she finished answering, she supposedly tried to "console" me by starting with this speech about how life is about compromise. I cut her off after that one sentence, because while discarding some coupons for ShopRite is easy enough, real boycotts are about sacrifice. I understand only too well that many people who "boycott" stuff are really just not interested in it to begin with. Cutting off something that actually does affect me and accepting the consequences for it is exactly how I hope to lead by example, unlike people like Dad who continue to think that the type or quality of wood that The Home Depot offers or other stuff pertaining to their own interests is more important than the well-being of an entire demographic.

Shortly before I went to bed, Mom suggested I propose paying Vanilla in money orders, which would only entail an intended recipient giving me their real name and home address, awaiting their payment, and redeeming it at a post office. Followed through with it, but I won't be surprised if she doesn't answer me about that.

From there, I got the idea to accept those in general, along with checks and cash. While I might consider putting them on the table for donations (e.g. in lieu of deviantArt points), though, I probably won't want to post my own home address anywhere online.

Asked Mom about the idea of getting a P.O. box, but she told me that those cost rent. She asked me why I'd want to do that, and while I tried to explain, Dad asked why I can't just use PayPal. I told him because it supports Autism Speaks, and he just rolled his eyes, before starting on some rant. He said that it's not like AS is anti-autism, I cut him off with "It is!", none too gently, and he's like "I'm done." Mom asked me to apologize to him for my tone, I did so, Dad ranted a bit further, saying "I'm sorry you feel the way you do," and I just took off without saying anything.

(To be fair, we were both tired, and neither of us were thinking that, maybe a response like "Oh, please..." isn't gonna incline me to sugarcoat anything I say. Well, can't wait to see where this goes after he wakes up.)

Unrelated, I have received that game in the mail as of yesterday. Picked it up late in the afternoon, after two trips to the mailbox before noon that yielded nothing.

(I had already received the system last Sunday, via Amazon Prime. The deliveryman stopped on the side of Long Island Avenue while I was filling a recycle bucket there with pinecones and other yardwaste, and handed it to me right there.)
