Turns out that you can only save your game by dying (including by invoking the Game Over screen via a second controller), and that you can only respawn at either the starting point or the entrance of the Great Palace. In most games, I would prefer to die as few times as possible, resetting the game whenever that happens, and I even used to use savestates whenever I played this game on FCE Ultra. Game 1 at least let you just save, even if it respawned you at the starting point with only three full heart containers, and even though I did get good at beating A Link to the Past in just several hours (not counting breaks, during which I'd still leave my (actual) Super NES on) back in 7th grade (multiple straight hours of classes, five days a week, plus homework for each class and day), I had already beaten that game two years earlier and knew it from beginning to end. With this game, I never got further than the Island Palace.
Having this already on my Wii from two years ago, I think I'll just allow myself to lose my last life after clearing each palace, whenever I would do so naturally, or else just leave the game running if I need a break after a given dungeon.
