Managed to expose the entire base yesterday, but there turned out to be a thin rusty pipe running into it. (Some wires exposed where the pole itself had been cut a while ago indicate that it probably originated as a lightpost, although I never saw the attached light even early in childhood.)

Reported the issue to Dad, who was lying on the couch watching TV, and he said he'd check my work on his own timing.

Brought it up again when Mom came home, and she suggested that I take a picture on her iPad to show them. Dad then suggested that I try breaking it apart with a sledgehammer.

Managed to knock a few chunks of concrete off from above, before whacking the pole sideways and hitting the base again from that angle. Managed that way to split it right in half, leaving an imprint of the pole on one half, but the pipe was still intact, having run upwards through the pole.

Another picture and some more debate later, the three of us had a look together at it, and Dad gave me a hacksaw to take care of the pipe before I'd fill the hole back in.

Today, back to uprooting, probably just the stuff above the surface. Those roots run a whole foot deep, and one would have to dig the entire patch up just to get all of them out, and the point if it all is mainly to create a smooth surface to plant grass on. Here's hoping all the remaining vines will eventually die in the ground once I'm all done.
